"Elimination" Issues
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:47:24 AM »
So, I wanted to get some advice here. I've been doing the Paleo/Primal thing for about 3 months now. I've recently noticed some issues with... hmm, number two. I am no longer regular and no longer fully "solid". This has been an issue for close to 2 weeks now.

My basic daily food intake is like so:

Morning
-------
3 Eggs, 3 Bacon strips, cooked in lard or tallow
or
1 cup Fage Yogurt (plain), 1 Banana
or
1 cup Kefir (plain) + mixed berry smoothie

Lunch / Snacks / Throughout the day
--------------------
can/pouch tuna or chicken
1-2 cups misc nuts
apples
bananas
almond butter
left overs from last night

Dinner
------
Steak w/ some shredded cabbage
or
Ground beef, peppers, onions, cooked in lard or tallow
or
Scallops in butter
etc

with some fruit afterward, sometimes

Now... do you see anything in there that would cause these issues? This wasn't happening before when I was keeping more dairy in my diet, when I started removing that, I started having problems. Initially, I assumed I was sick, but this has gone on for a few weeks and I don't feel sick in any other way.

I had this too, It did normalize. I couldn't give you an explanation as to why, but I had runny and not solid "#2". However, after a while it just became solid and was normal and I was going regularly, so can't help you much

Did you also feel fairly bloated for a while? That's about where I am now. Bloated and crapping once every other day.

The yogurt and kefir could cause these issues if you are sufficiently lactose intolerant.

I'm having the same issue.  I couldn't stop going for the first week, but I'm 4 weeks in now and going maybe every other day.  It's definitely not loose, and there's not much too it.  I am, however, peeing an insane amount.  If things don't improve by the weekend, I'm considering a laxative.

Actually, I've upped my intake there as those are the only things that actually make me...go. A glass of kefir will get things moving in about 30 mins. I've also never had lactose intolerance issues, and have always been a very heavy dairy consumer with no issues like this

Probiotics might be helpful. They work for me. Sauerkraut/Kimchi/Yogurt/Kefir

Once every two days has now become my "regular."   No pain, no discomfort, no ill feelings; maybe this is the "normal" for a Caveman/woman.  JMull
Paleo works for me!!

This post summarizes quite well what most people go through:

Any idiot can get on a treadmill and watch TV and then take great pride in the fact they've exercised.

Exactly. Less fiber and stuff you cannot digest + less food overall = less quantity and frequency of elimination.

Thanks Il Capo! I guess I know what I'm eating for the next few days.  I thought maybe the strawberries I eat would be enough to help things along, but I guess I need to add to that.

I suffered this, from April till about September. For me, the problem was fruits and veggies. When I went to a mostly meat diet I was improved not just in that area but in various other areas too!

You're saying that fruits and veggies actually *caused* these issues. That's new to me. It seems like it'd be the opposite..

Different strokes for different folks.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

When your stomach adapts to the diet and starts producing more HCL (HydroChLoric acid) the problems will vanish.
