1 cup of coffee and wine each day causes excess stomach acid
« on: August 07, 2006, 04:11:50 PM »
With the goal of making myself more productive at work and having a more relaxing evening I took Art Devany's lead and added coffee and wine to my diet

Only problem is that they cause stomach acid problems.  I am either not eating enough high-base foods to offset the acid or these drinks just aren't for me

Any experiences?

I am probably not one to comment - I drink lots of tea and coffee during the day and often have a beer or glass of red wine with my meal at night.

There may be problems due to both - if I have too much coffee I do get jittery - but I have not taken the step of eliminating either yet.....

First off welcome aboard Nikki glad to have you

I dont drink coffee or tea or even alchohol
when i have tried to drink tea and coffee it give's me really bad reflux for hrs after.

I enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of wine at night but yeah, I get this same type of reflux stuff especially if I sing a lot that day (I'm in a band)

The key is to offset with enough fruits and vegetables

Here's a helpful table:

Hi  my name is Rich and I am glad to see others that still drink coffee and follow this WOE.  I just started again and I am hoping for more success.

Potassium bicarbonate can help neutralize the acid load and serves to equalize the sodium-potassium ratio in your body (not plasma, cellular).
My daily intake of vegetables is sufficient but I'm trying to re-balance years of sub-optimal eating habit and gain some leeway in sampling cheese, wine, coffee and chocolate when the urge strikes.

Isn't potassium bicarbonate one of the main components in fire extinguishers powder or something? :o :o

I highly recommend a low-acid coffee processed in Germany called “Euromild”.  (I have no connection to the company) You can get both caffeinated and decaf.  I’ve used it for about 10 yrs and purchase 5 lb bags (beans) from a company in Toronto, but it’s widely available everywhere I think.

Potassium bicarbonate was used as a source of additional dietary potassium in some ketogenic diet studies, so I assume that it's safe for human consumption.
