Again with the fruit
« on: January 16, 2012, 09:58:00 PM »
Along with all the much-prescribed fat, I like to eat a 2-3 servings of fruit every day, even on days when I'm not particularly active - just for variety's sake.  How can my body properly learn to burn fat if I do this?

(Weight loss is not a concern, BTW.  If anything, I'm underweight.)

2-3 servings of fruit? Really, I don't think that is excessive for someone who is not overly concerned with weight loss. For example, if you ate 3 red delicious apples (approx 21g carbohydrates) you're looking at a total of ~63g carbs from your fruit servings.   If the rest of your day is generally fat and protein, that's not an unreasonable amount of fructose/sugar IMHO.

In *my* case it would be too much since I'm a recovering diabetic and focused on losing weight. If it's working for you, I wouldn't stress about it.

The rest of my day is fat, protein, and lots of non-starchy veggies.

Bear in mind that natural fruit and vegetables have a LOT of fibre, which minimises the spike in insulin caused from eating those foods. A smaller spike in insulin means your body will still use ketones as its main (and preferred) energy. It would probably take 100g+ of carbohydrates before your ketosis was affected. Less than 50g of carbohydrates is often recommended to get people into ketosis faster but I know paleo/primal eaters who can eat up to 150g of carbohydrates and still be in ketosis, so relax. You'll be fine :)

I was under the impression that the primal diet did not include much fruit. Fruit has fiber and vitamins but sugar. Don't we want to avoid this unnecessary sugar?

I eat lots of fruit, at least five serves per day most days, and it hasn't stopped me losing weight and getting healthy.

Most days, I have lemon water and a fruit snack. Sometimes, I'll have a small serving of pear. I wonder if I am getting enough?

I don't think fruit is essential if you're eating veges and/or enough fresh fatty meat. I just eat it because I like it.

Steelerbred - we just want to eat fresh natural food that is seasonally appropriate. So to have none at times and a lot at others is probably more in keeping with our natural diet.

This is exactly what I was curious about myself, so I'm glad to read all these answers!

Jean, did you eat this amount of fruit from the start of your diet journey, or did you eat none/little at the start and gradually increase as you lost weight?

I ate that much from the start. To begin with I wasn't going after weight loss specifically, and then I found I was losing stacks of weight anyway. I've had lots of friends asking about paleo when they've seen how quickly and easily I lost weight. I generally tell them to eat whatever paleo foods they feel like for a month or two to see what happens, with a max of a handful of nuts per day, but warn them they might have to cut back on fruit if they're not seeing the weight loss they want after a while.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with eating fruit. Some limit it because it's easier for them to lose weight without it, some have no problem either way.
For example, I can eat 3+ pieces of fruit and still lose weight, whereas my partner's progress slows with more than 1.
