alcohol
« on: November 16, 2006, 11:33:10 AM »
Hi, firstly how bad does alcohol effect weight loss and health.
Also as I have not stuck to the diet strictly I cannot pin point what has stopped me from losing weight. From monday of this week I have eaten everything that I am allowed, on some days more than others. However I had a few beers yesterday and although I know that is not really allowed I will stay to the eating part of the diet strictly. On other eating plans I have been doing, I have had to include the calories of alcohol and adjust it so I am losing weight. Can you really eat as much as you want and still lose weight and if so what happens if you add alcohol.
Cheers.

I think that alcohol per se is not so bad.  Art Devany even recommends a daily drink and frequently talks about drinking a Budweiser or glass of red wine.

The problem I experience is that if I have more than one drink, I tend to overeat as a result.

Since alcohol is a depressant, I would assume that it depresses your metabolism as well (I'm pretty sure that's documented). The calories of one or two lite beers would be negligible, but they would be on top of everything else you consumed. I agree as well that unless you're drinking a lot, it could be stimulating your appetite.

I drink a glass of red wine every day, for health benefits, obviously.  :D It has not interfered with my weight loss, (22lbs and counting so far.) but I never drink more than one glass.  I think the carbohydrates in beer, which is a grain-based beverage, might be more problematic for the paleo WOE.  Suze

ALCOHOL:  I have a "snifter" of Cognac as I watch the 11 O'clock news...7 days a week.  When two of my sons were stationed in Iraq I avoided the news until they came home...BUT kept the Cognac.  I've been Paleo for over a year and have lost more than 60 pounds, all of my arthritis and gained the ability to think in depth, run further, lift more weights and endure more stress.
Without the BOOZE I probably would have lost a little more weight BUT I may have enjoyed the news less.  JMull
