bacon all day everyday?
« on: May 27, 2011, 09:39:41 AM »
This might be a stupid question but what are your thoughts on eating bacon for every meal? My appetite has gone down since I started Paleo 11 days ago and am having a rough time eating more than 1000 cal. (STILL, for those of you who have been helping me by reading my blog).

The only thing that I can never resist, no matter how full I feel... is bacon and eggs. I look forward to my mornings and even though I am running late for work, I will always make my 2 eggs and bacon for breakfast. Instead of skipping meals, is it ok for me to just have eggs and bacon with vegetables for every meal?? (I think this is because I had been bacon deprived for the last 30 years. Been told how bad bacon was for me and all...)

I think that as long as it's for the short-term it's fine. Processed meats are never a good thing to eat, but having a few ounces of it a day with other whole foods is a bit different. After you have your fill of bacon, you'll grow tired of it anyway :)

I've been on a bacon kick as well, just bacon & eggs for dinner last night!

I think more bacon and eggs would be fine, especially if you use omega 3 eggs.  Since you use uncured bacon, the only potential issue would be salt, and given the rest of your diet is clean, I suspect that would be okay.

You can rinse the bacon in water, which will help to wash out salt.

Eggs are a nutritional superpower and well worth eating every day!

Ayami,

Go to Trader Joe's and buy a package of their uncured Applewood smoked bacon. It's very, very good, thick cut, pretty inexpensive, not too salty or sweet, and actually pretty lean. In fact, I like bacon grease for a lot of other recipes but I get very little of it from this bacon. I have to buy uncured Farmland bacon at Sprouts Market to get a enough fat to save for other things even though I don't think Farmland bacon tastes very good. Cook the Trader Joe's bacon low and slow, it's delicious.

If it were me I would just not eat until I got hungry. All those foods listed are fine but if all you eat is that limited then you will most likey be missing out on some stuff. (assuming paleo bacon)

I get my uncured bacon from henry's market called beelers? and it produces a lot of fat but i dont know how and where to save it? I was told not to put it in a glass jar... where do you store yours? I bought new uncured bacon with low sodium from whole foods so when I am out of that I'm going to check out Trader joes :)  As long as it says uncured, no nitrates, its fine correct?

there are 3 issues with bacon all the time

1) salt
2) nitrates
3) animal welfare and subsequent impact on meat quality.  Pigs suffer more than any other animals under intensive farming systems.  They are fed a hugely unnatural diet, lots of antibiotics, and live in horrible conditions where their natural instincts are squashed.   I never buy bacon unless I can be sure it's nitrate free, organic, outdoor reared and preferably from rare breed pigs

also, bacon doesn't have the most optimal O3/O6 rations

It is very tasty though.  Breakfast tomorrow!

I gave up eating beef years ago because I'd only eat beef if it had no blood on it and it was too tough to chew. Recently I watched FOOD, INC. and stopped eating chicken and started buying free range (but really stopped eating eggs too) but started up because of Paleo... and now I'm iffy again. :(  oh my bacon!!!!

This sounds like it would be pretty pricey pork lol, wish I could afford that kind of meat right now.

I always slam back 1-2 fish oils with my pork belly.
