Bananas and Apples concern.
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:29:33 PM »
i recently read a post about what and what not to eat.  i was a little thrown with a comment about  not eating bananas and apples, because of the sugar content.  are they not worth it?  i eat them both once a day  for a snack.  the bananas are for patassium as well.  what do you think..  i would appreciate and and all opinions.  thanks.

I eat bananas and I am still losing weight. Can't stand apples though (except cooked) so no loss there. I suppose I might lose weight faster if I cut the bananas out but I see no reason at this time. There are better sources of potassium though, like coconut water, for instance.

I eat bananas at times... but I do not make them staple food.
I choose the nutritious and organic varieties.
I do not recommend the cavendish type.

The latundan variety of banana is the gold standard in diarrhea treatment in the Philippines.  Helps harden stools and balances minerals in the body.

Apples are liver movers, toners, improvers.  If you can get them organic, get them.  If you get apple juice, make sure they are not from concentrate.

I recommend apple juice in some liver flush recipes.
I'm on Raw Paleo diet but I have kids to feed on cooked paleo diet.

I eat bananas, but in moderation. Whole for a snack, dried for energy food while cycling, and the ones that get too ripe I peel and freeze for addition into my blended protein drinks after exercise. If a banana is the sweetest thing you eat, I doubt it will cause you any problems. If you're trying to lose weight, stick with vegetables. Sugar helps your body store fat. Eat less of it and you'll burn fat more readily.

A buddy of mine tried Paleo to lose some weight, but he was eating large quantities of watermelon. He didn't lose much weight that way...

I fry my overripe bananas in a big pool of ghee. Deeeeelicious!  ;D

Oh gosh that sounds tasty! :D  I must try!

I try to eat my bananas with some fat (I read that helps reduce insulin spikes... is that true?) - dipped into almond butter, with coconut cream poured over (cut into a bowl), or sometimes with a splodge of organic double cream.  My weight loss is slow and I'm sure it'd be faster if I cut out bananas and other fruit, but I'm happier eating fruit and losing slowly.

thanks for the info, and the dessert ideas.  dont know if i would try them when my main goal is weight loss, but still a good idea if i ever crave something sweet.  never thought of frying them  i had plantains when i was in the bahamas at the first of the month, and wasnt to impressed.  not a fan at all.  but i hear they are very good for you.  just not for me lol.  today i stuck with veggies only.  felt pretty good actually not eating any fruit at all.  i found that i had been focusing on fruits more than anything so i switched it up today.  another day paleo and feeling righteous!!

For breakfast I sometimes make a three egg omelt with a banana and almond butter for the filling.  It sounds kind of gross if you have never tried it, but it is amazing!

So many delicious ideas in this thread.

When I'm camping, I toast apple slices over the fire on my hotdog fork for desert.

Oh yes!  I have to bring this back into my life.  You have just reminded me that my mum used to occasionally make us "big breakfast" sandwiches on weekends when I was little - bacon, fried egg, fried tomato and fried banana sandwiches on grain bread... the banana and bacon combo was delicous!

To your mention of "too much sugar" I once heard a lady tell her nutritionist how she ate 3-5 apples or other "sugary" fruits a day and couldn't lose weight.  The nutritionist obviously told her to cut back to 1-3 and she should be fine.  IMO, one or two of these fruits is perfectly fine, just don't over do it.  Btw, I LOVE a big juicy green apple.  It is very filling.  Red and other varieties don't do much for me.
