I had to go basically meat only for a few weeks because of digestive problems (which I have mentioned several times here before).  I got a stomach bug and seemed to develop an overgrowth of bacteria in my small intestine (SIBO) as a result.  I had diarrhea basically everyday for 2 months before I started my own treatment.  Because of this, any kind of fruit and most veggies would set me off (I thought it was fructose malabsorption).  What worked for me was to cut out vegetation for 3 weeks, take peppermint oil tablets (enteric coated) and start a powerful probiotic (Align).  So basically, the peppermint kills the bad bacteria, and the probiotic re-colonizes the gut with good bacteria. At this point I only take the Align daily.  I stopped taking the peppermint oil when it got uncomfortable...like my body knew I didn't need it anymore.  I know you don't like supplements Marika, so maybe you could try a peppermint tea?  Kombucha?

Things are normal again, though I do avoid the high fructose foods still.  I've done some research into fructose digestion, and it's not something I want to eat a lot of anymore.  I will eat most veggies now, but many fruits are not on the menu.  I really only eat blueberries and bananas regularly.

I hope things improve for you Marika.  I hated the digestive issues.  The cramps are almost certainly some form of mineral imbalance.  I didn't get mine under control until I started a multi-vitamin.  I know it's not what you want to do, but it keeps me paleo.

If only I could figure out what nutrient that I was lacking in that caused the muscle cramps last night....if I could just make that up somehow, I'd love to keep eating this way!
http://forum.zeroinginonhealth.com/showthread.php?tid=1208

Can be too much amino acid in the blood/muscles at the point of starting intense exercise(causes cramps); I say starting, because if you kept going, you would naturally feel very thirsty as your body would try to flush the acids out.

Also; drinking lots of water may flush out important electrolytes which are essential from metabolic interactions, the deficiency of which may cause cramps. Too much NaCl could cause the excessive drinking. *Shrug*

theres no way we should eat meat only, we have molars designed to chew vegetation

You ought to read some from this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Catching-Fire-Cooking-Made-Human/dp/0465013627/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252547013&sr=8-2

There are a whole lot of clues that we've been meat-eaters (and cooks) for a long time.  According to the author, those molars are for soften/cooked proteins.

I suppose it's according to what source we deem to be true.

As to vegetation, what is it that we get from plant sources that we actually need to eat some each day?  We're fat-burners, plain and simple.

"I eat pork nearly to totally raw often and have had no issues at all. Been doing that for a couple of years."

EW. I could never do that. Pork is bad enough COOKED!

"So meat contains every micronutrient?"

Muscles do not, however, eyeballs, brains, tongues, stomachs, intestines, kidneys, livers and hearts sure do.

Blood also contains all the micronutrient, and there is blood in meat, so...

For people who do not eat eyeballs, brains, tongues, stomachs, intestines, kidneys, livers and hearts I would recommend including vegetation.

organs are pretty nutrient dense.

Karlin, thanks for your detailed reply! I think it might be fructose malabsorption too. But so many fruits/veggies have been problematic, I can't figure out which ones are safe to eat now. Thanks for the tips, I can't do peppermint or teas as they both upset my stomach a lot. I might just stick with the meat only for a while and see how it goes. So far it's been wonderful!

Miles, thanks for your tips too! I don't really do intense workouts per se, although I do end up doing a lot of exercise just as part of my day. I walk 2 miles every day to and from work, plus I also carry heavy things down three flights of stairs. So it is possible that what you are saying is true. Once I finish up what I have in the fridge, I'll try going for meat that is salt-free.

PliestoceneDream, pork is actually much better when it's not cooked all through to be tough. I always thought I hated pork too, but when it's cooked right it's juicy, moist, and delicious!

on the issue of the "necessity" or admissibility of vegetation in human diet, there is a series of convincing (at least for me) posts in the "primal wisdom" blog (http://donmatesz.blogspot.com/): see "primal potatoes" on the presence of amylase in human saliva

Those post are all a real stretch and devoid of any real scientific methodology.  I wouldn't take any of it seriously.

They were brought up here:

Hm, it seems they are saying that eating potatoes would help you lift a bison? I don't think I agree with that.

My last few days of meat-only have also been extremely weight-lifting-intensive at work (the store is closing and I've had to carry a bunch of big heavy inventory down from the attic using the narrow, "old-building" staircases). And I can say for sure, I definitely feel much better energy-wise since being meat-only. After working all morning doing that, I wasn't even tired. Whereas when I was eating carbs, I would get tired and hungry so easily!

I love that this is giving me such a strong energy level all day! And great focus! I had no idea that even carbs from fruits and veggies could be causing sugar crashes. But I see now that they were!

I really, really feel great on this meat-only way of eating. I can't believe it! In fact, yesterday was my first day with absolutely NO fruits or veggies at all, just meat. And last night I had no foot or calf cramps at all!! I slept better than I have in a really, really long time. My body feels so slim, my belly is not distended any more from bloating, even my face seems slimmer! And I love it that I don't hungry like I did before. I look forward to eating (because the meals are soooo delicious!) but I'm not hungry like I was before.

I'm loving this! I can't believe it. I never would have expected that meat only could make a person feel so healthy and strong! I see the long list of "deficiencies" that the Cron-o-meter is reporting, but really, I do not feel deficient in any way whatsoever. I feel better than I ever have before, and I think finally I am digesting my food properly too!

P.S. I've been reading the "Zeroing In On Health" forum on zero-carbs, and there's a lot of really helpful nutrient info in their "FAQ's" section.

When I was pregnant with my son I had the same cramping sensation in my toes, feet and legs. The deficiency I had was potassium. you might check into that.

you didn't mention any cramping in your most recent update, but i've had muscle cramps related to low magnesium and low iron, however i think low iron is not the issue as meat contains plenty of iron, so if it continues look into magnesium containing foods.
