Bowel Movement Frequency / Fiber
« on: August 14, 2009, 03:44:43 AM »
Just wondering how often cavemanforum members defacate? Recently I've been worrying alot about my lack of daily movements. Conventional wisdom states you should be pooping everyday, but for me, every 2-3 days on average. And back when I tried the 2-week meat only diet I barely pooped at all. Apparently its all down to fiber, and the more fiber you eat the more you poop. According to the following blog post however, fiber is more detrimental to your health than not and should be reduced as much as possible... Interestingly he makes the point that regular bowel movements are not necessary at all. So im currently experimenting with reducing my fiber intake, along with nuts (they seem to clog everything up) and see how things pan out. Anyone got any other thoughts on this?

The comments are a good read too..

This is a very interesting theory. I, too, am looking more into this concept.

The one thing I find most intriguing about not defecating on a daily basis is that the digestive system is given time to rest, re-build and detox... when it's not having to work 1-3 times a day.

Is this good? Is this bad? I'm not sure.

I've found that soluble fiber - which is to say, the kind in fruit, not the kind in whole wheat - is very useful to keep me from becoming overly constipated or gassy.

Granted, the constipation and gassiness probably come from carbohydrates, so someone who ate only meat probably wouldn't need it.  Conveniently, the carbohydrates in the paleo diet come mostly from fruit, which comes with its own fiber.

The need more fiber theory started in the early 1970s. I think the studies were from African tribes having a low incidence of colon cancer. Back in the early 1970s Americans were primarily consuming white breads such as Wonder Bread and Sunbeam.  Everyone started thinking of the benefits of bran and whole wheat bread.  I know back then some people actually sprinkled bran on their dinner to increase fiber.   African natives weren't eating whole wheat bread. Most of the fiber was from fruits and vegetables which are a soluble fiber.  Bran cereal, and bran flakes added to recipes are useless.   In the late 1990s people jumped on the soluble fiber, but it was from advertising by Quaker Oats.  Fiber from paleo fruits and vegetables are fine. But, I wouldn't have oatmeal or bran cereal.
I go about every morning.

By the way, Wonder Bread is made by the same company that makes Hostess Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Zingers, Dolly Madison pastries and other nutritionally empty junk foods.

Here's one of the 'contrary' videos on the role of fiber in our diets.
I've posted this before but it's worth another look.

That 35 gram a day recommendation?  Did anyone check to see if it was making things worse or did they just pull some facts from their....well, lets go to the video.

I am very regular, once every morning. When I eat a 25:25:50 ratio of carbs/proteins/fats, everything is very regular and happy. Too little carbs and I actually get very loose stools, instead of constipation like many folks on a high-meat diet. For some reason my body seems to like the fruit for the bulk, I guess?

Before the diet, it was probably twice a week.  I am tending to go longer now, probably at least 5-6 days between visits to the throne on average, unless I help things along with an espresso (breve, my twice weekly cheat).  No straining or other issues, just don't need to go very often.  Maybe people are right when they say I'm full of #$&^.   :)

My daily cheat is my morning espresso. So I don't know if my morning go is diet or espresso related.  :D

Breve is very rich. I've had those only once.
