Butter is not paleo, since it is dairy.

However, many people have difficulty finding fats that are paleo.  Grass fed butter, or better yet, grass fed clarified butter or ghee, is not a bad fat if you can't find strictly paleo choices, so you'll find quite a few of us using it.

I use it, but as Warren says it's not paleo. If it's from grass-fed cows it has lots of fat-soluble vitamins in it, and a healthy fat profile. Plus it tastes good and it's a convenient way to add extra fat to a meal.

Some people are concerned about the level of hormones in it, because dairy cows are typically milked late into pregnancy.

I use it, but mainly goat butter (because of the hormone thing).  I find ghee nicer to cook with than tallow, which is so saturated it often hardens while you're eating it.

I use mainly goat butter, goat ghee, and coconut oil.  The latter I like a lot but butter has more vitamins

While butter may not be paleo, it's better than using vegetable oil... more natural.
