Carb refeeding
« on: January 11, 2012, 05:12:51 PM »
Came across some articles about carb refeeding. The basic idea is that after a while on LCHF some ppl might experience a reduction of leptin hormone levels. Once a week, after a glycogen depleting exercise, one should load up on paleo carbs, to stabilize leptin production. Some even recommend 2-3 days of carb loading a week!
As all of my strenght workouts are centered around glycogen depletion, I thought I might give it a try.
Or maybe not.

Any thoughts?

I was looking at a book the other day that advocated carb cycling. One day of "high" carb and one day of "low" in order to keep your metabolism guessing and working at a higher level. I was rather sceptical, but even his "high" days aren't that high and it's all in the early part of the day. There is also a reset week every 3 weeks, but I haven't gotten that far yet. His exercise plan seems pretty well thought out. It's a lot of squats, push-ups and what not. The cardio part is stuff like jumping jacks. I think the guy's name is Chris Powell. I suppose you could take his premise and do it with all paleo carbs rather than the All-Bran and Kashi that he recommends. I also looked at his meal plan and asked my husband who on earth would eat that nasty sounding stuff!! I've been spoiled by all the yummy things I eat everyday!

Simply having some paleo carbs - meaning fruits, not tubers - immediately before or after the strength training is probably the best bet.

Mark's Daily Apple isn't paleo - it's "primal", which to him seems to mean paleo plus whatever else he feels like writing about, whether it's potatoes, rice, or that protein powder you can only buy from him.
