Depression and Irritability on very low carb diet
« on: September 28, 2010, 04:37:51 AM »
About 5 days ago I went down to around 8-10 grams of carbs a day and ever since i've been feeling awful. Is this  just a normal initiation period?

Damn, that's lower in carbs than what Atkins demands! You might want to ease into the low carb instead of going into it cold turkey.

I've been on 40 grams for some time now so its not a huge change.

If it doesn't work for you, then it doesn't work for you.
Just move on to the next experiment.

If it is causing you to enter ketosis, it is normal to have some negative effects for a few days.

people are mistaking this diet for atkins, eating paleo does not mean eating so few carbs, the carb intake is certainly much lower than an average american diet, but you are missing the point behind the diet if are eating this way

I agree, but more to the point: people are mistaking this WOE for "Nutritionism" - over emphasis on macronutrients, vitamins, antioxidents, etc etc. I hate that more than anything - "Oh well, I don't eat chicken because there's not enough protein per ounce". Seriously? Ugh. Just eat real foods, and eat what you want to eat, when you want to eat it.

I don't think there is any single right way of eating paleo.  You can eat a lot of fruit, and eat a moderate carb paleo diet; you can eat no fruit, and eat a zero carb paleo diet.  Both are paleo.

I know personally if I ate what I wanted when I wanted then I would be getting excessive amounts of protein and not enough fat.

Within the constraints of paleo, what would you be eating?  It's not all that easy to get excessive protein on paleo.

A lot of meat. I'm more concerned with the lack of fat.

Eat fatty meats and cook them in fat.

I do that I eat mince cooked in goose fat or ghee. Its still only around 140 grams. Its difficult to get another 60 without protein.

You need the protein if you are trying to lose bodyfat  ??? What is the fear of protein?
There is still lactose in butter.
