Does Brown Rice offer any benefits for me?
« on: March 15, 2016, 04:36:09 PM »
In limited portions and frequency, does brown rice provide anything beneficial for me?
I was told other than some nutrients/minerals, which can be had elsewhere, it's basically
useful for making you feel fuller for longer, and also helping to bind food for elimination.
Is this accurate?
Are there other benefits?
What about negatives?

Thanks

There are Pros and Cons for sure.

It's cheap, lasts forever, and entire cultures depend on it (Asians).

That said many feel it's not ideal.  Some just can't eat it due to gluten issues etc.

See what works for you.  There is no one size fits all.

Rice is traditionally the main  replacement grain for wheat in gluten free cooking.

Rice is probably not as bad as wheat, but it isn't paleo.  I think the only reason to eat it would be if one couldn't afford real food.

1. Brown rice is rich in selenium which reduces the risk for developing common illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis.

2. Brown rice is high in Manganese: Manganese helps the body synthesize fats. Manganese also benefits our nervous and reproductive systems.

3. Rich in Naturally-Occurring Oils which is are beneficial for the body as these healthful fats help normalize cholesterol levels.

4. Promotes Weight Loss: The fiber content of brown rice keeps bowel function at it’s peak since it makes digestion that much easier. Brown rice is the perfect addition to the daily diet for those seeking bowel regularity.

5. Brown rice is considered a whole grain since it hasn’t lost its “wholeness” through the refinement process. Wholes grains are proven to reduce the buildup of arterial plaque and reduce the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol.

Brown rice is high is arsenic!! Various articles advising to avoid it on Chris Kresser, MDA and Paloemom. Definitely not recommended for children!

White rice has lower levels of arsenic so more acceptable as a starch inclusion IF you feel you need the extra carbs to account for activity/excercise. White rice is essentially just starch so has no antinutrient a or other minerals so not obvious benefits or negatives other than small levels of arsenic (so not recommended more than a few times a week) and a boost to starch calories.
