giving up-can anyone change my mind?
« on: January 16, 2012, 07:33:20 AM »
I've been doing Paleo for a couple of weeks. At first I felt fine but this past week I've felt low in energy. My energy levels before I started paleo were great, I was doing aerobics/jogging or cycling on a daily basis and has been for some while.

I've seen posts that say the tiredness will pass but I'm training for a race and can't really afford to go on like this,I'm not training at my usual level and today I don't even feel able to do anyhting

I'm really pleased I no longer crave sugar and carbs so I'm planning to try and keep these limited but otherwise eat a balanced diet

I've pretty much made my mind up but 2 questions:
1) can anyone dissuade me, ie. if i hold out a day or 2 more will my energy come back??
2) if I do stop paleo how long will it take for energy to return to normal?

Paleo diet is:

- not necessarily a low carb diet... if you need carbs, get carbs

- not necessarily cooked... if cooked paleo diet does not suit you, go raw paleo diet

- not paleo diet if your meat, fruit and vegs are of terrible quality... check your sources.

I'm on Raw Paleo diet but I have kids to feed on cooked paleo diet.

You'd need to plan to hold out for at least a week more, preferably two, after upping your animal fat intake.  Paleo isn't really for people looking for a quick fix, I'm afraid.

About the same time the carb cravings come back.

As was said, Paleo doesn't have to be low carb. WHat you are feeling is most likely a ketosis swap over. If you are doing endurance athletics then you need the carbs. While not technically paleo a lot of people here and elsewhere use squash and sweet potatoes for a pretty good carb source. I eat them some and have never had a problem with them causing any issues with my body.

Do what you want of course but dont lie to your self and thing that any type of grain legume or dairy is "good for you". They will and do cause problems. If it were me i would eat paleo and get my carbs for racing from those listed above. Or if it is endurance type stuff rethink that and go for a more sprinty type competition. We are not made for Endurance sports.

If you arent doing endurance stuff even low carb paleo can do just fine. I took me about one week to get over the ketosis swap. Some take up to a month. Plan it around your races or do a carb up just for races. Carbs equal activity, and high activity at that. Use them correctly. There is no need to eat less useful food. Eat the macronutrients that make you feel good and perform, Just keep it paleo.

The only person who can change your mind is you.

My advice would be, give up low carb if you have to but don't give up paleo. You may not get as lean as you'd like but at least you'll still be healthy. And if you decide to go back to low-carb later when your training isn't so hectic, it'll be easier.

Well, do you want to be healthy or not? There is an adjustment period. It took me a little over a month to feel like I found the groove and I've been refining what I eat over the last year. Now after a year + I feel so much better than I ever did before, physically and mentally. I'll never go back. I have no sugar cravings because I know how bad I will feel and how good I feel right now. It just takes a little patience.

But even if you go back to SAD now, it doesn't mean you failed permanently. Its something you can always come back to and try again when you're more ready. Although I would say why not just do it now?

Actually, you don't need carbs for pure endurance activities.  Endurance activities are aerobic, and the aerobic metabolism can burn fat just as well as it burns carbs, once your body has adjusted to burning fat.  Even ketosis may be beneficial, as heart muscle gets more energy per unit oxygen from ketones.  There are a couple of studies cited in the research forum on this.

Your body does need glucose for anaerobic activities, such as weightlifting or sprints.  Most people find that they can get sufficient glucose for these purposes from fruit or from the liver's natural conversion of excess protein to glucose through gluconeogenesis.

Stand corrected :) I knew about gluconeogenisis but didnt know it was enough glucose to fuel a marathon type thing.

Not to be rude Josh, but eating grains to support a cancer "cure" is as ironic as you can get :( Since a paleo diet will all but guarantee you wont get cancer in the first place.
