Has anyone tried a ground beef-only diet?
« on: March 29, 2012, 01:36:14 PM »
I wondered if any of the cavemen here have tried a ground beef-only (or close to only) diet? If so, I wondered about your success/failure, lessons learned, etc.

I haven't ever, but I would guess that you're better off getting a mix of protein sources. But if you do go only ground beef for a protein, I would recommend finding a way to still get some greens into your diet. Spinach, kale, chard, mustard greens, whatever... you need fiber too.

Another concern is that it's tempting to go for ground beef for economic reasons as it's one of the cheaper meats. But according to news reports up to 70% of store bought ground beef contains "pink slime", ammonia-treated protein filler. And there's no way that stuff is paleo-friendly.

I already eat that way, but I was going to experiment with VLC for a few weeks and then long-term the thought was to reintroduce greens (I love beet greens, kale, tatsoi, etc.) and perhaps make ground beef my primary protein for cost reasons (With the occasional sashimi dinner).

95% of the ground beef I eat is grass-fed and comes from either local farms or one U.S. Wellness Meats.

Welcome to my college life. It definitely still works well but the taste gets annoying after only eating ground beef for months.

I was once a member of a zero carb forum and a woman was eating two pounds of raw ground beef a day and I don't remember her having any problems. She was on it for at least a month. There are people on that forum who have been eating noting but meat, fat, and water for the past five years. I couldn't handle it past one week.

Now that I'm poor and don't have a grill, I've been forced to be more frugal and re-evaluate my meat choices.  Lately, I've been eating grass-fed ground beef for about 80% of my meals, the other 20% occupied by mussels (I also eat fruit, sea salt, and spring water; that's it).  This has been the case for the last 3 or 4 days.  So far, so good: I feel great, enjoy the food, and am saving lots of money.  You?  Have you continued to eat ground beef on a regular basis?  Is it going well for you?

I find this works for me in batches: for 2-3 weeks I eat almost nothing but (ground) beef, then I sort of have enough of it and for a couple of weeks switch to a greens-centered version of paleo, then back to meat again. I like to let my stomach tell me what it wants :)

I agree about letting "my stomach tell me what it wants."  After maybe a week of ground beef and mussels, I got sick of both.  The idea of eating either now nauseates me.  I also ate a lot of rib meat—ribeye steaks and rib roasts—and I'm also sick of that.  Interestingly, though, I am not sick of grass-fed beef.  I just ate a pound of delicious, well-marbled, grass-fed New York steak.  Much more tender than rib meat, with much less gristle.  I preferred rib meat in the past, I think, because New York steaks tend to have way less fat.  But as long as personally choose fatty cuts of New York, I get the best of both worlds :)  I'm looking forward to trying porterhouse next :)
