Help with Blood Sugar
« on: January 10, 2012, 02:44:26 AM »
Hi

I've been living my new lifetstyle for about a week now. I have had the tiredness which has stopped now and I do seem to be getting more energy.

I have had the not going to the toilet which has also sorted itself out, the smelly breath again sorted.

So in a week a lot has happend and I am glad I am doing this and am committed to save my life and to get fitter and healthier.

I am a type 2 DB who has always rebelled against taking medication and the changing point for me was over Xmas when my sugar readings got up to around the 326 mark that was the life changing Eureka moment when the penny finnally dropped that my life was at stake.

I have seen a reduction in my BG readings but they are still bouncing up and down and seem to be around 176 - 252

I know it will take a little while for my BG to settle back down and head towards normal but I wondered if I could get your advice.

How long does it take generally to settle down and would I be better having a little fast for a few hours to in effect force it to drop to a lower level, or do I just keep on keepin on and it will fall naturally.

I am eating all of the right foods and am not having any of the scary sugary foods and bread etc so I am enjoying eggs, meat, fish, salad, all that kind of thing and my sugar craving has died off at this point so I can see some good already from this lifestyle change.

But your help with the BG issue would be good as that is one of my main issues just now.

Thanks for all of the support

Cheers

Tony

Try these guidelines to use bitter melon as part of your food.

http://bittermelondiabetes.com

Raw bitter melon works best, with skin, with seeds.  Just 1/4 of it every morning for a week or 2.  But you can also use capsules or tea if bitter melon is unavailable in your area.

The idea is you may need nutrition from the bitter melon fruit.

You can also follow DeWayne Mc Culley's version of the paleo diet.

seared wild salmon (almost raw)
lightly steamed broccoli (almost raw)
extra virgin olive oil (raw fat)

http://www.curemanual.com/2011/04/type-2-diabetes-natural-cure-lecture-of-dewayne-mcculley-parts-1-3-of-13/

I would also look into other pollutants you may not be suspecting:

- coffee, tea, other drinks
- condiments you use, or do not see in commercial food
- isopropyl alcohol
- lotions
- deodorants
- perfumes
- fabric softener in your clothes

Anything you cannot eat, do not put it on your skin, you are being polluted.

Plus do you store chemicals in your home, smell chemicals, work with chemicals,

And if you haven't done any detox protocols, you might want to check them out.
Colon cleanse, kidney cleanse, liver flushes... ever seen a chiropractor, acupuncture?
And are you sleeping well, on time, before 10pm? Every day?

There are many many factors to look into... be thorough.  It will be worth it.

A detailed food journal is the best way to get started.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

Hi!  It will help us if you can post up a food journal. I've only been doing paleo for about 3 weeks now but my BG levels have dropped from averaging ~160-170  to  70 (fasting) and low 80's two hours after eating.  Yours were much higher than mine, but I'm confident they'll improve if you stick with the program.

Make *sure* that you don't have any hidden carbs in there. As a diabetic starting the program, I actually counted carbs for a few days (even though it isn't strictly necessary).  All it really did was make me realize how many carbs I was consuming BEFORE going paleo.

You've been with the program a week and are already showing positive results. If you stick with it you should see a continuous improvement in your numbers. Throwing in some intermittent fasting might work to speed the process a bit as long as you can otherwise tolerate it.

It normally seems to take a week or two for blood sugar levels to normalize on strict paleo.

The best way to troubleshoot would be to start posting a detailed food journal.  List everything you eat or drink.  Include all cheats - we can't help you if we don't know everything that you're eating.  Also include sauces and minor ingredients that you think are paleo - sometimes they are, sometimes they're not.

It is also possible that your pancreas is already too damaged for paleo to fix the diabetes. Once the beta cells have burnt out you become more like a type 1 diabetic, and then paleo would help but it would not be enough on its own. Keep monitoring the blood sugar, and if it's still too high after a month or six weeks of strict paleo, you might need to consider medication. Blood sugar that high stuffs up your whole body over time, so my advice would be to take the meds if you have to. However, the fact that it's heading down is a hopeful sign. Good luck!

I'd bet RAW paleo diet will restore pancreas function.

I don't know. I just thought it was important to mention that if your pancreas is totally stuffed, paleo might not fix it. Obviously if you can fix it without meds that's better, but the main thing is to get the blood sugar down.

I think you should continue paleo and monitor your condition closely (like weekly full blood count). If you're taking meds then monitor them too so that you are able to adjust the dose as you improve.

You've already done pretty well, so I don't advise any precipitous behaviours like dropping meds, just get your head around the idea of slow and steady rather than magic bullet.

Accepting that it will take as long as it takes will remove a lot of stress and make it easier (mentally) to be successful, but you need to bear in mind that there may be a need for medical intervention for part of your journey, or maybe all of it. Even if you still need meds you can feel and look way better than you do now and that's a plus.

From what I've read about b-cells, they turn over like most cells, some die, more come into being. The population regenerates.
