Hidden carbs!!!
« on: January 11, 2012, 10:18:56 AM »
I didn't do so hot over the weekend and then yesterday was a total wash out due to some trauma involving my youngest daughter. So this morning I jump right back in...and still manage to work in 26 carbs for breakfast!!! I had an egg white omelet w/ broccoli, salsa and some cheese, 2 pieces of bacon and a bowl of berries. The berries alone counted for 16 of those carbs! I've not been eating a lot of fruit so that I can stay away from the sugar, but I didn't think of the carbs. So now I'm thinking that the whole of last week where I thought I was doing great, probably not so much! I've started putting what I eat on myfitnesspal.com as it keeps track of your calories and the breakdown of carbs, fats and protein.

Lunch today wasn't the greatest, but I had a date with my oldest daughter and she gets to pick the restaurant, so it was chinese. I didn't eat a lot, but it still racked up both the calories and the carbs.

Dinner tonight is going to be turkey/pork meatballs in marinara with some steamed broccoli. I know that broccoli has carbs and I assume the marinara has some as well as it's full of tomatoes. Do I scrap the sauce for myself? That will be hard to do as it's exceptionally yummy, but I will if I need to.

I am heading to the gym later this afternoon to get a workout in. Should I concentrate on one area or just do an all over workout?

I'm starting to get frustrated! Not so much with the paleo lifestyle, but with everything else that seems to want to sabatoge me!

If I stick with what I have planned for the rest of the day, that's a total of 103 carbs. I know that I can do better tomorrow. What should I be shooting for? I know that I can't avoid all of them, but I feel like I really wasn't paying attention at all!

Mark Sisson at "Mark's Daily Apple" suggests 0-50g for extremism weight-loss, 50-100g for healthy weight-loss, 100g-150g for maintaining, and anything over 150 weight gain. It usually works for me to stay between 50-100g.

I would eat 100-150g carb per day, and I lost heaps of weight and got healthy on that amount. I know some people need to control it more to lose weight, but I wouldn't sweat it too much. I normally advise friends to eat whatever paleo foods you feel like to begin with and then adjust it if things aren't moving in the direction you want after a month or two. You may find that what you're eating naturally is just right for you.

I wouldn't worry so much about the carb count as about avoiding the peanut cluster next time and perhaps switching out the egg whites for a smaller number of whole eggs.

I agree with the above.  I think that stressing about the carbs in your food is an unnecessary worry.  It is for me, anyway.  That's why I love Paleo.  As long as I follow the basic guidelines, I'm already eating much better/healthier than I was previously.  I have also found the Is It Paleo? flow chart to be helpful.  As long as it falls on the chart, I feel good eating it.  I'm not saying I sit around and eat fruit all day because it's Paleo, but I get a good mix.  I also agree with the egg suggestion: don't ditch the yolk!  Good luck :)

Thanks! The peanut cluster was a comfort thing I think! My grandma used to make them for Christmas every year and since she died 6 years ago, no one has made them. It wasn't as good as her's so there is no chance of a repeat! ;)

The egg white was mainly b/c I was bored with whole eggs! I have to hard boil them I think. I like them better that way.

Thanks for the info about carbs. I started this journey thinking that I would have to eat none what so ever. It's nice to know that I can have some and still lose the weight!

You should do fine below 120g of carbs a day. I don't remember how long you have been paleo but 'Life Without Bread' (not paleo, but low carb) recommends you start out at about 108g of carbs a day and slowly reduce to 60g-72g per day.

I've only been eating this way for a little over a week. I've seen some results so I'm happy with that. I was just a little alarmed at how many carbs I was eating when I thought that I was doing really well at eating none! I would really like to get down to the 50g a day range for a while and see what that does. I know that there will be days when I go over whether planned or not, but I hope to maintain that level for as long as possible. Will I run into a bad kind of ketosis if I manage to get there and stay there?

The keys to ketosis are drinking enough water and eating enough fat.

Thanks Warren. I've been trying to up my actual water intake and not relying on tea. Right now the only additional fats I'm eating that isn't on the meat is olive oil and butter. I have some coconut oil, but haven't used it yet. I have actually needed it for anything. Most of the veggies have been steamed. I guess I could have used it tonight when I roasted cauliflower, but I went for the olive oil out of habit.

Are you able to get grassfed meat yet? Best source of fat is fatty cuts of grassfed meat.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I can, I just have to remember to get to the Farmer's Market on Sat mornings. I asked my farmer if they had tallow and they don't, but they do offer lard. I am waiting for a response as to how much I have to get at once. I would hate to buy large quantites and have the rest of the family not like it. I don't cook seperate meals, so what I eat everyone eats! I can also get grass-fed butter and cream if I purchase a herdshare which is ridiculously cheap, but I'm not sure if I need to go that route yet.

If they have grass fed beef, just ask him to bring you a few kg of fat next time he comes and you can make tallow yourself. It is very easy.

How do you make it? I took the fat off the turkey I roasted yesterday for a family get-together and just cooked it down till it melted. Like that?
