How do I get into ketosis?
« on: November 16, 2012, 06:10:21 AM »
Hi everyone,

I started this new lifestyle last Friday and thought I'd share my experience and, hopefully, get some feedback/tips from you all.

My goals: to lose weight, gain energy and live longer!

In the last year I have been suffering from low energy - constantly tired and low in mood, I also ballooned in weight putting on 2 stone (28 pounds) and thought I'd give this Paleo way of life a go.

Starting weight: 223 pounds (6ft 1 bloke with a belly!)

Last Friday I went for it. I have been grazing during the day on nuts and berries and drinking lots of water and green tea (no milk, no sugar). I have cut all agriculture and dairy and processed foods from my diet (I lived off 'ready' microwave meals). I still have my morning coffee. Then, in the evening I have a Paleo 'feast' - meat, eggs, steamed veggies, berries, fish; as much as I want/need.

The first two days were hard. Headaches/stinging eyes/no energy/very hungry...

...then it got a lot better. I didn't crave carbs/sugar and didn't feel hungry - I have gone a couple of days with no grazing of nuts and fruit and just having an evening paleo meal. My mood and energy levels are elevated and I feel good (still have bad moments in the day, but a glass of water seems to sort that out) and I feel a lot less bloated and thinner - 'love handles' and belly are noticeably less flabby.

Weighed myself today...

...211 pounds!

My goal is: 186 pounds -  I was that 2 years ago and feel like that is my 'fighting weight'.

A long way to go, I know - will stay on this plan of only eating in the evening (grazing during day if necessary) until I hit 186, then will eat paleo meals through the day as I want/need them.

This is a great way of life so far...would be grateful for any thoughts/tips...especially concerning ketosis - how do I get into it and turn my body into a fat burning machine...?

cheers

Welcome.  Sounds like you are on the right track!

You might already be operating in ketosis if you can avoid hunger between evening meals.  If you want to know for sure, get some ketostix and test.

You meantioned elsewhere that you are snacking on nuts and berries. You should probably stop that if you want very low carb.

Try meats with greens at each meal instead. Say, meats/fats with a salad for one meal and meats/fats with some cooked veg for another

Thanks, avelin. I only eat one meal a day in the evening and typically have a few berries and a couple of handfuls of nuts throughout the day with water. Perhaps a small lunch (meat and salad) would be better...I'd certainly prefer it...?

The ketosix have arrived and there are 5 shades and I'm on the 3rd shade (40++) - does that mean I'm in or do I have to be on the 5th really purple shade...?

You're definitely in ketosis.  The really dark ones are meant to tell type I diabetics that they have a problem - you won't get those just from diet, nor would you want to.

I love being in ketosis - can literally feel my body burning fat. High energy and feel good. Having amazing sleeps. Now need to put this energy to good use. Time to exercise...

I hardly ever showed up as positive on ketostix even when I was VVLC (30g), I think it was a combination of my burning most of the ketones, and drinking so much water (which diluted my urine)

Constant thirst is how I know that I'm in ketosis!

So, is there a set period of time that ketosis is followed for?  Or is it a pretty much permanent state?

Thanks.

I generally stay in ketosis for the majority of the time.  During summer and fall, when really good fruit come into season, I may drop out.
