Nuts, dried fruit...and wheat
« on: August 31, 2009, 05:19:35 AM »
If you are sensitive to wheat, you probably know this already. Since going gluten-free, I learned that wheat is dusted on some roasted nuts and dried fruit to keep them from sticking together, and wheat gluten is also used in some glues and in drywall, of all things.

That little tidbit was enough for me to order a dehydrator and dry my own fruit.

BTW, Eden Organic doesn't use it in their dried fruit

3 things that are in almost everything we eat and good for no one: corn, soy, wheat.

Just thought I'd pass that on.

Interesting! I didn't know that they added wheat to nuts and dried fruit. Good reason to avoid them!

I only have raw nuts anyway, and extremely rarely have dried fruit, if ever...

Not raw, just the ones that are roasted and probably bagged or canned. And not all brands.

I've seen trail mix with the nuts and dried fruits with a white powder on them.  I usually buy raw organic walnuts at Trader Joe's which don't appear to have anything on them. The label just says: Walnuts. If you buy raisins or dried cranberries, some of them have sugar and canola oil on them. (Canola oil on dried fruit???)  I think Sun Maid raisins are just raisins with nothing added but they aren't organic.

They put the oil in dried fruit to keep it from sticking together. Weird.

BTW, regarding almonds, even though they are labeled raw, they are not. They are pasteurized. All USA-grown almonds  must be pasteurized by law unless bought directly from a grower. Here's a link to buy unpasteurized almonds:

I make sure all my nuts and fruit are grass-fed.. It costs precisely 10x the amount of normal nuts and fruit, but he assures me it's worth it. Hard to get a hold of him sometimes though, he's always on the move; I trust him though, because the packaging the nuts come in is just the same as the packaging from Julian Graves so it must come from a reputable supplier.

Another reason to be careful with the dried fruit:

If it is packaged, there is a good chance that sweetners and "Natural Flavors" have been added. Read those labels on the back!

Making your own will taste better anyway ;D
It’s amazing how many products, food and otherwise can contain wheat/gluten…shampoos, cat litter, charcoal briquettes etc etc.  Lot’s of things to watch out for but it gets to be second nature in short order when you have to avoid it!  Eating paleo makes it much less likely to have problems with cross contamination issues too.
