bummed and in need of encouragement
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:05:37 AM »
so my friend lost 100 lbs in a year eating paleo.

I read WHY WE GET FAT by Gary Taubes.

So I start a diet that was only protein, fat, leafy vegetables, and just some dairy. I also drank a lot of diet coke.

15 days later, I am 10 lbs lighter. I am pumped.

My weight loss started to slow. then stop. I cut back on dairy/cheese but found if I ate any I always ate too much.

so a week ago I cut out diet coke. still not losing a few days later. so this saturday I go dairy free/diet coke free.

all I am eating really is meat/fat, leafy veggies, and bleu cheese dressing...oh and eggs.

so 72 hours go by. I eat 3 meals a day..not too hungry.

and I lose ZERO.

I am so tired of being fat. I so want to believe that it is not calorie in/calorie out but rather about insulin and carbs.

grrrrrrr....

Start a detailed food diary, then we can help.

I agree. Post a food journal.

Also, remember that weight naturally fluctuates from day to day with fluid, how full the bowel is, etc. 72 hours is not long! So don't be discouraged. I'd try weighing yourself weekly at most, and give it at least a month before expecting to see a big difference. It can take a couple of weeks for your appetitie mechanisms and metabolism to normalise after you switch to paleo. Once that has regulated itself, the weight should start to move in the right direction.

And yes, definitely stay away from the artificial sweeteners. For some people, they can result in an increased appetite.

While the initial weight loss is great, it's mostly water weight and everyone sees the weight loss slow down after the first couple of weeks.

Cutting all the dairy and replacing the diet coke with water is the right thing to do - and yes, blue cheese dressing is dairy.  You should not expect to see visible weight loss in a couple of days.  For men, comparing week to week is a good idea; for women, month to month may be better.  Keep in mind, your friend's weight loss happened over the course of a year, which is a lot in weeks or days.

As others say, a complete food journal would help us give specific advice.

Welcome!

You lost 10 pounds in a month? And a fair amount of that with cheats. That's good progress!

Things to consider, if your friend lost 100 pounds he or she had a LOT of weight to lose and it does go faster. When you're closer to your goal weight, it goes slower. How many pounds do you have to lose? If it's 30 or so, then it's going to come off slower.

Also, are you male or female? The week of my period, I gain about a pound the scale doesn't move for a week.

The scale also doesn't tell you the whole story. You could be losing eight, but gaining muscle. Get a tape measure and use that as a guide as well. Last week (being period week) I didn't didn't lose pounds but a half inch of my waist disappeared.

Don't get discouraged. Everyone is different. You should give it a solid six months to really see where you're at and how you feel. This is a lifestyle change more so than a weight loss plan. Weight loss is a benefit, but it shouldn't be the only thing you're working to achieve.

Good luck!

I am male and have about a 100 lbs to lose. I was 280 and am now 268.

I will keep a food journal. and I have not been counting calories.

edit: I have started food journal as of today, so I am going to journal 6 days and then weigh.

I depend on my tape measure.  Not my scale.  I see much less fat on me than when I started in March.  My arms no longer have wings!  That is a really nice improvement.  I have a waistline back!  My clothing fits beautifully, and I'm going down about a size every two months, to me that is good progress.  I lost weight slowly as well in the beginning.
