On Paleo - Practically passed out after a bowl of pasta
« on: May 21, 2016, 07:25:44 AM »
I've been on paleo for 21 days.
Yesterday night I decided to make a little exception and have a meal of pasta with grated cheese and spinach.
About 1.5 hour or so after I had this meal I felt a bit tired.

I went to lie down for just a short while. I was overcome by extreme sluggishness and decided on the spot not to go out that evening but stay in..
Next I knew it was four in the morning! I literally passed out...

Something similar has happened to me when overeating sugary foods in the past.

Is my body now oversensitive to things like pasta, i.e. white flour or what could have happened?

Hi Hanna

I am new to the site and new to Paleo, so pls take what write with  grain of sault (my experience mostly comes from low-carbing.) It's been rumored on low carb forums and from my experience it is so, that over time we develop intolerance to carbs. Myself, after lets say 2 months of strict low carbing, if i happen to pig out on something overly carby-suggary, i feel unwell, get bloated, start feeling exhausted, depressed, , i start binging etc. I am not sure if there's such phenomena on Paleo, but i am afraid it is pretty much possible  :(

I know, right!

Last night I decided to have myself a little cheat meal. I had sweet potato fries with dipping sauce and then from froyo for dessert. Not only did my energy get drained but I got a nasty headache and ended up going right to bed. Stepped on the scale this morning—for fun—and I was up a pound. Mostly cause of all the water retention probably. But I have noticed that for the past few weeks of Paleo eating, my weight doesn't fluctuate in leaps and bounds like it does when I eat carbs. It is a steady decrease or relatively the same by a few points.

One night with carbs and sugar and i'm up a pound. Hahaha. I DIDN'T even enjoy it. I think it's great that Paleo eating is so satisfying that cheat meals feel gross. Never again.  NOT worth it.

True! Sorry you felt like that  :( It's my week No.3 , i am -2kg *does happy dance* Do you follow the 85:15 rule or you are going for 100% Paleo? For me, it turns out it's 85:15, not intentionally, but because i am in a crazy period and sometimes all day long away from home/ travelling/ can't bring much food with me, except for snacks. STILL, i am seeing results, and i am really happy with this way of eating  :)

What happened was that after a few weeks of paleo, your insulin sensitivity improved, and when you had an excessively carby meal, your insulin spiked and drove your blood sugar level low.  And yes, it's likely what happened to you with excessive sugar as well.

Think of it this way:  your body is now normally sensitive to nonfoods like pasta, and doesn't want them in the system.  Previously, excessive carbs had beaten down your body's defenses, but now your body is recovering.

As your insulin sensitivity improves, your insulin response will eventually become more controlled, so incidents like this will likely eventually become less severe.  That said, the best solution is to avoid the cheat meals!

It sounds like you might have diabetes, so I would get that checked out at the doctors.

And also get some food allergy testing done, because sometimes if you have food allergies they can also make you feel very tired and lethargic after eating them and gluten and wheat is one of the most common food allergies out there.

As you eliminate things from your body adjusts to life without them. You're body will continue to get used to whole foods/real foods and may react with sensitivity if you indulge. I know that I feel terrible if I eat pasta or rice or anything of that nature. Remembering the feeling that I have helps me stay away from those things.

Good Luck,

Gray
