Protein shakes and when to drink them in relation to working out?

I was talking to my fitness instructor this morning and told her that I was feeling a bit nauseous during class. I told her that I had 2 hardboiled eggs this morning, but it was on my way to class. She told me that she does a protein shake in the mornings and uses whey powder, berries, almond milk and maybe a spoonful of PB if she feels like it and makes sure that she gets it at least an hour before working out. I know that I can make it paleo, but when should I drink it? Some things I've read have said to do something first thing in the morning before eating to jump start your metabolism, and others have said the opposite. I know that her class kicks my butt and I can't do it on an empty stomach. I'll pass out! And if I'm not drinking the shake everyday, can I use whey powder? I'm not getting any other dairy if I can help it, but it doesn't bother me if I do.

Protein shakes are not paleo. The paleo way to get protein is to eat it, not to drink it.
Waiting an hour between eating the eggs and starting class might be a good idea. Also make sure you are getting enough water and salt.

I think the water and salt was the main issue this morning. I meant to fry up some bacon which would have fixed the salt, but I ran out of time. I'll try that next time.

There is no solid answer because everyoone is different. I would eat real food 2hours before training but use BCAA or gel(non paleolithic) 10-15 mine before training. Try to gauge how eating 1-2 hours before training effects you. There is also beef or egg protein powders available if you plan on going that route.

The best workout supplement is steak.

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.
Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.
If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.
'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

IMHO, protein shakes are just another form of over processed food.
Whey (the protein in protein powders) is a byproduct from cheese making. For centuries it was either thrown away or fed to livestock. Only the desperately poor ate whey.
Today, it's dried, pulverized into power, fortified with vitamins and minerals, and sealed in a plastic container so that months (if not years) later someone can dish out a scoop and make a "healthy protein shake".
While this doesn't disprove proteins powders health benefits, if you've adopted a paleo mindset, then this should set off all kinds of red flags in your head. Many of the problems with modern diets derive from the fact that so much of modern food is over processed.
Instead of looking for a shortcut (which is exactly what protein powders are), why not try and find another answer that isn't a short cut?

The other answer would be to get up earlier and not get engrossed in the book by the side of the bed!
I have decided to forgo that route and stick with what works, just earlier. I'll save the smoothies for if the girls ask for them!

Coconut oil/milk seems to stay down well for me during training, I suggest trying a bowl of fruit in coconut milk before training.

Very few people need a protein shake. If you are struggling at workouts you may need:
1) Water during breaks
2) More rest before and after
3) some fruit before or after.
4) To adjust the intensity of the session until you build up stamina.
5) All of the above.
Nobody needs a protein shake for stamina. I'd argue nobody needs a protein shake, period, but hey, maybe if you are trying to build an unnatural amount of muscle (think bodybuilder or elite sportsman), then the lag in between absorbing a protein shake and digesting a steak is too long.
But 99.99% of people drinking protein shakes are posers who should train harder and eat more meat.
