Starting Paleo. Wondering what changes are to come.

Hi ya'll,

Most forum threads I've seen are pretty dormant so I don't know how much response this will get, but here's to hoping!

I've been exercising over the last month to try and get back in shape. I'm 6'1" 235 lbs. I'm down from 240 already, but I know to hit the 190 goal I set for myself it'll take diet too. Since some friends have had a lot of success with Paleo I wanted to convert! My initial questions are:

I'm in an okay place energy wise from the way I've been eating. Enough to fuel my workouts/basketball and get through the work day anyway. With switching my diet, should I expect a fluctuation in energy in the beginning when starting Paleo till I adjust?

Does eating free-range eggs really matter as much as some blogs I've read suggest?

I've got enough family members with osteoporosis that I have gone calcium heavy in my diet through dairy. With that restriction though, should I worry about being calcium deficient?

Hi

 a) It will be really important that you make sure to increase your servings of the foods that you eat. Some people are going to look at your portions and think that you are crazy to eat half a kilo of meat or huge plates of salads for example. But remember that you are removing quite a lot of what used to be your source of energy in the shape of carbohydrates.  Make sure that you get enough fat, never cut away rinds for example. It takes a little while to adapt.

 b) I don't think that it matters very much whether one eats free range eggs or others. This is more of an ethical animal protection issue. The main determinant of your health is how much you exercise.

 c) Not as I see it, you could add cheeses as your "cheat" if you are worried

Welcome to paleo!

You'll need to make up for some of the carb calories you're dropping.  More or fattier meat will help.

The main issue on eggs is the omega 3 versus omega 6 balance.  I eat pastured eggs or organic omega 3 eggs.  Free range is not as big a deal as what the chickens are fed.  That said, if you're on a budget, commercial eggs may be okay, especially if you get some fish with the skin on for omega 3s.

For calcium, I take calcium pills just in case.  But I also get lots of water to avoid kidney stones in case I overdo it.
