Sugar cravings
« on: February 16, 2016, 08:08:06 AM »
So, since the holidays, I've managed to fall off the paleo wagon. With eating out at other peoples houses and just eating what's been available, I've started to feel crappy, unhealthy, run down, and I've gained weight. I've been working on eating paleo the past 2 weeks or so, but somehow over the course of the past couple months, I've developed an unhealthy relationship with sugar. I had started getting drinks at Starbucks..... And I'm not sure if that's where it started or not, but I'm struggling to break the sugar habit.
I have since returned to drinking just plain black coffee over the past month (which I actually enjoy more than lattes anyways), but I'm noticing that if I go a day or two with no added sugars in any food, I start getting adgitated and think about foods with sugar. I've never really had this problem before- even when I initially started paleo a while back. It clearly shows it's addictive qualities in sugar.
Any suggestions? Could it be the foods I'm eating? Think I should give up fruit for a while until the cravings go away? I do tend to eat sweet potatoes a lot... Probably once or twice a week- though thats not really unusual for my old paleo habits. Any chance this is causing my inability to kick the sugar habit?

On a side note: I work at an all natural and organic hippy food store- and I'm surrounded by baked goods half the time because I work in the prepared foods department. Which- I'm pretty sure is adding to my delemma here.

Sweet potatoes have a lot more carbs than fruit.  I'd suggest trying giving up the sweet potatoes and keeping the fruit and seeing if that helps at all.

Sugar cravings are the most difficult to shake. It takes a bit of determination and smart planning. Try keeping paleo/protein snacks at the ready. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. On the snacks, I like Braatime meat snacks and of course I make my own snacks. Once you are away from sugar for a couple of weeks the cravings lessen quite a bit (at least they did for me). Good Luck!
