Sweet Potatoes?
« on: January 13, 2012, 08:11:31 AM »
Hi,

I've seen some conflicting info in my start of Paleo...are sweet potatoes in or out?

Thanks! K.

Sweet potatoes are not paleo.

A lot of people don't realize it, but sweet potatoes and other tubers were domesticated about the same time grains are.  Like grains, they are reproductive organs that plants protect with antinutrients.  And like grains, modern forms have much more starch than wild forms did.  They're basically just another neolithic agricultural crop in a different form.

Warren's right, but they are included sparingly, particularly around workouts, by some.

They're not strictly paleo but as far as I'm aware they have more vitamins, and less effect on blood glucose, than a regular potato.

Post work-out, I don't think they are particularly harmful in small doses.  A lot of people who are primal (not quite the same as paleo) eat them on occasion

When I refer to sweet potato I mean the 2nd picture in this post (apparently some in the US use the term yam, but to me a yam is an african yam)

Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

I eat them as an occasional vegetable, but I have to admit that as time goes by I'm enjoying them less - they taste too sweet now. I might start using them for sweetening in rare desserts.

I think the main risk with tubers is if you eat them as a staple food, ie replacing your carby grains with tubers as an everyday source of a significant proportion of calories. The healthier option is to replace the grain calories with calories from healthy fats.

Just wait till lemons start tasting too sweet...
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.
