Trying to get bigger
« on: February 27, 2012, 07:12:47 AM »
Hello all,

I am new to crossfit and the paleo...enjoying both so far, except for the no milk...man do I love milk.

However, I am not really looking to lose weight, but get a little bigger and put on more muscle.

Whats the best way to achieve this goal..is it best to go straight paleo 100%, which is what I'm doing now, or maybe add in some carbs and milk, white milk only.

Still learning and just wondering...all answers and direction will be appreciated.

Currently 175 lbs  roughly 5'10"-5'11"

Thanks,

Junkman

3 X a week is good, you need that recovery time on rest days.

Maybe think about dropping crossfit and just lifting weights instead. As the name suggests, crossfit will make you plenty fit but from my understand of it, it's not designed to make you into a big guy.

100% paleo with some fruit before and after training will see you make good gains.

Skip the milk.  If you tolerate dairy, try whey plus heavy cream as a weight gainer.  If you do have an issue with dairy, eggs and/or coconut may help.  Basically, lots of protein and saturated fats.  Like Xon said, group your carbs around your training period.  Any safe carb will work, but the fructose in the fruit will quickly replenish your glycogen and the glucose will improve your protein uptake, making fruit a good option.  Include some protein after your workout along with the fruit.  A can of sardines is my favorite.

Best to avoid milk proteins entirely!  Eat some protein instead!

Carbs - paleo doesn't have to be VLC, although it's almost always LC.  I'd say anything from 5-30% of daily energy from carbs is OK.  If you're working out then paleo carbs will help energy and recovery

Paleo carbs
Squash and pumpkin
chestnuts
beetroot, parsnip, swede
fruit

I agree with what I think celticcavegirl was trying to say:  best to avoid milk proteins entirely; eat some real protein (i.e., meat) instead.

Thanks a lot yal...I have been eating meet like crazy and I love how after I eat a huge steak and green beans with almonds, I dont have that nasty full feeling. I am full but not the feeling I would get after I would include mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese! lol

My trainor for crossfit said if I added milk immediately after the workout it would help because that is when it would use everything in it and not store anything.

Im exactly a week and one day into the paleo and am liking the effects it has had on me!

Thanks again for the info

Glad you like the effects, but given that you are drinking milk, you are exactly 0 days into paleo. Try paleo and compare.

man do I love milk .... white milk only.

@junkman: Your real question seems to be a search for justification for drinking "white milk." "White milk" vs. what, black milk, maybe choco-milk (sidebar: most chocolate milk doesn't even use real chocolate, BTW)? ;) If you're going to consume milk/dairy and you want to bulk up, then it seems to make sense to make it as easy to digest as possible, which appears to be raw fermented or aged dairy, preferably from the most digestible sources for you (in my case, raw aged sheep's cheese is the most easily digested and yummiest dairy product I've tried yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some dairy food out there still more digestible for me). One of the most common mistakes that dairy consumers make is to not even try different varieties of dairy products to see what actually works best for them, nor to try going without for a month or so.

I see a lot of people eating green beans on paleo. While they're legumes, they apparently don't contain lectin, which is what rules out other legumes.

I don't believe that's correct.

What is correct is that green beans are mostly pod, and it's only the seed that seems to be problematic.  That makes them less bad than some other legumes from a paleo standpoint.
