Water Weight?
« on: January 11, 2012, 06:04:01 AM »
On January 2, 2012, I weighed myself and the scale read 155 lbs.

I started a strict paleo diet on January 3 - mostly fat, enough meat, and leafy vegetables only. I REALLY like eating fat...I'll ask the butcher straight up for any fat scraps. I only feel the need to eat twice a day, and my workouts have improved so much because of my increased energy.

I haven't weight myself since until today (January 11), and the scale read 129 lbs.   :o

26 lbs in 8 days seems EXTREME to me...so I was wondering if this is all just water weight. I have made a huge effort to changing my lifestyle, but this seems kind of too good to be true.

Any insights?

No insights, just envy

But congrats! Perhaps some of it is water weight but it could be that your metabolism really likes the whole paleo effect!

Perhaps a broken scale?  I've heard of people losing 8 to 10 pounds the first week. But 26 pounds seems extreme.  Unless the on January 2 you celebrated by by stuffing yourself with food and drink at an all you can eat buffet before getting weighed.

Hey Warren! I didn't take my measurements, but I do know that my clothes don't fit anymore - had to buy new pants for sure. When I look in the mirror, my core area (stomach, waist, hips, thighs) are a lot smaller. I think it's really noticeable, because a lot of people keep commenting. They also say my face is a lot thinner. From now on, I'll start taking measurements :)

I thought of that...damn, I hope not! I bought this digital scale just this past Christmas, so it's new...I really, really hope not!

Oh, and about Paleo Dude's comment about all-you-can-eat-buffets...I can't even do that anymore. If I eat enough fat and meat in a meal, I physically cannot eat past my satiation point. Buffets are wasted on me :( Not worth the price!

Well, you know you've lost a lot, then!  I wouldn't worry that much about whether the 26 pounds is accurate or is off by 5 or 10 pounds, you know you're doing the right thing.

I doubt it is all just water weight, though some of it probably is.  Nice going!

Make sure you are wieghing yourself around the same time every day, the best time is probably right when you wake up after fasting all night.  I gain about 5 to 6 Lb through out the day just by eating and drinking a lot of water.   Congratulation on the wieght loss!

Extreme? Maybe.. Maybe not. It depends. *Some* of it is water weight I'm sure. However, if you're physique is changing then you've definitely lost some serious fat as well.   In my case, I went from 211 pounds in late December to 192 pounds this morning. Not quite as drastic, but still pretty quick. I had to re-adjust my glasses this week because my nose (which wasn't "fat") actually got thinner and my glasses started sliding down my face.

My two cents: You eating enough? You feel good? Energy levels good? If the answer to those three questions is "Yes," don't worry and enjoy it!

Seems like a lot of people on Paleo, myself included, had rapid weight loss in the beginning (although it sometimes doesn't start right away). Then after you reach a certain point, shedding the pounds becomes more difficult. In the absence of crap food and with proper nourishment, your body is probably taking advantage of the situation and just "normalizing". Of course, what your body thinks is the ideal weight and what you think it is may be two different things, and when you reach that point it will be harder to shed the weight beyond what you body considers ideal for itself. Enjoy the weight loss while you can. It will get harder in time.

Decided to pack away my scale for a while; the over-achieving side of me tends to obsess about something until I go insane. I'm determined to make this about improving my health and fitness, as opposed to achieving the lowest number possible.

And thanks JayJay - I'll keep that in mind. I figured the rapid weight loss can't continue forever.
