weight gain in first two weeks
« on: January 27, 2012, 03:01:55 PM »
Hi, I'm new here and I just started the paleo diet a little less than two weeks ago. I feel great-I have more energy and I sleep better. The only thing I'm not liking is that my muscles feel weaker and more tired in the gym, but I assume I'll adjust. I weighed myself a few days ago and I had lost 6 lbs. I weighed myself today and I am up 1.5 lbs. I know that's not a lot, but my goal is weight loss, so I'm a little worried. What should I be expecting? I read somewhere that somebody lost about 8 lbs the first week, but then gained it all back (still while doing paleo.) I've been talking about how great this way of eating is and how much easier it's been to lose weight than it has been in the past, so I'm disappointed to see a 1.5 lb gain.

Weight naturally fluctuates, so its best not to weight too often. If you must weigh, track it on a chart so you can see the overall trend over time rather than focussing on the most recent drop/gain.

Your best bet would be to post a food journal on here, and then some of our experienced members will be able to help pinpont any areas that might need tweaking.

Here is a typical day:

Breakfast: 2 whole eggs and 1 egg white cooked in a pan lightly coated with coconut oil with vegetables on the side

Snack: Small cup of berries topped with a little coconut whipped cream

Lunch: Grilled chicken breast with vegetables or paleo coconut shrimp with paleo tartar sauce

Snack: Walnuts and berries

Dinner: More chicken and vegetables or flank steak and vegetables

Snack: Berries and coconut whipped cream

A few things to try:

-Cut out the snacks and eat bigger meals. To lose fat you want your insulin to be as low as possible for as long as possible. Snacking keeps it up.
-Forget about egg whites, this isnt a fat loss thing, more of a health thing. Plus the fat from the extra yolk with help with satiety
-For fat loss a low carb paleo approach seems to work best for almost everyone. Try to keep them in the 20-50 range.
-Eat more red meat! Its better for you than chicken and more filling.

Yes, yes and yes. Eat the whole egg, emphasise red meat rather than chicken, try having your berries as desserts rather than snacks. If your meals have enough fat in them they should sustain you until the next meal and that will help get insulin levels down. Don't starve yourself - snack if you are hungry, but whenever you need a snack, think back to the last meal and make a mental note that you need more food and/or fat than that. Keep increasing the food and/or fat until the meals sustain you. It took me a few months to get that right reliably. Now I can look at a plate of food and see if I need to add some fat for it to sustain me.

Hmmm interesting. Why is red meat healthier than chicken/white meat? My meals do hold me over until the next meal-I just snack because I love snacking. Thanks for the replies!!

Omega 3 and 6s are a pretty common term for any nutrition inclined folks. Heart disease is pretty heavily affected by the balance between the two intake levels. On a standard american diet (SAD) the omega 6 content is ultra high. About 20:1 or even 40:1. It should be about 2:1 or 1:1. Omega 6s are pro-inflammatory.

Grass fed beef(and all ruminant animals) have a near 1:1 ratio. Pork and chicken have a much worse ratio, though i forget what it is.

The snacking, while you enjoy it, may be slowing your fat loss. If you have any issues that would be the first think i would change.

As well as having a better fat ratio, red meat is more nutrient-dense and it boosts metabolism more.

Again, thanks for all of the advice! I'll try eating more red meat and I'll look into the fat ratio in chicken.

It will depend on what the chicken's been fed. If they're genuine free-range, eating grass and bugs, it won't be too bad, but most chickens are fed grains, soy, canola, etc.

Weight gain also a very typical target. but you have to eat twice a day. take 2 hour rest after eating. Save energy. Use healthy foods items like fish, meat, chicken etc.
It help to achieve weight over a time...

I would say add more fish into your diet. I have found that when I eat fish 3-4 times a week my weight will start to come down. Just my 2 cents  :)
