Weight Loss
« on: January 09, 2012, 03:28:32 PM »
I have started the Paleo diet about 3 weeks ago by cutting out sugar and grains completely. I had still been eating fruit but 1 week ago reduced my fruit intake to 1 cup a day. I have not lost any weight and I am just wondering what I am doing wrong? I dont eat breakfast, and so at lunch i eat chicken breast with a large salad, i eat a lot of cherry tomatoes- would that count as a fruit? For dinner i usually eat chicken and vegetables or steak and vegetables cooked in coconut oil or ghee. I weight 80kg and need to lose at least 15kg to get to a normal weight. i walk every couple of days but lately ive been feeling very tired so i usually come home from work and stay on the couch for the rest of the night! Any suggestions as to what i am doing wrong? Thanks

Tomato would count as fruit yes.

Best thing to do is post a detailed food journal in the food journal section of the site. Don't leave anything out and be as specific as possible.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I am actually experiencing the same issue. Completely cut out sugar but recently took a liking to grapes. I didnt lose a lot of weight my first time aru d and am not off to a great start this time around.....contemplating a kickstart eith fasting.

Based on why you say thoughh, I kind of wonder if maybe you might be eating too little? I read on another board that regardless of your diet, you need to have enough calories to burn. The fact that you are eating chicken breast, maybe it could be low in calories and lean and thus putting your body into starvation mode? Just speculation, of course.

I'm guessing not enough fat and protein, and maybe an unnecessary concern about portions and calories.

Post a food journal.

Eat fattier meats.  Extra protein from lean meats the body turns into blood sugar; extra fat sustains you without making you fat.  Replace the chicken breast with fatty beef, or at least with dark meat with the skin on.

What do you consider "vegetables"?  Paleo isn't just "no sugar no grains", it's also no tubers - potatoes and sweet potatoes - no legumes like peanuts or beans, and no dairy.  Any of those things could be keeping you from losing weight.  A lot of people consider things like potatoes, lima beans, and corn niblets to be "vegetables", but they're definitely nonpaleo.

A food journal would be a good idea.

Thanks guys for your advice.  :D

Is smoked Salmon paleo? because I sometimes snack on that. The vegetables i eat range from cauliflower puree with ghee mixed in, broccoli, spinach, zucchini, cucumer, onions and lettuce - no starchy ones!

I usually have a raw cocoa powder drink at work filled with Coconut milk instead of my usual coffee. I admit I need to up my fat intake although I still have a 'fat phobia'! Last night I ate some spoonfuls of virgin coconut oil mixed with shredded coconut which was quite pleasant.

Im cutting out my cherry tomato habit to ensure im keeping my insulin low! I need to lose this weight! I dont eat any other fruit.

Thanks

Anything pureed or juiced might spike your sugar. If you puree foods, you should try checking your blood sugar one hour after you eat it. Dr. Davis at the Track You Plaque Blog has a method of checking blood sugar to lose weight. Here is the blog entry (work safe): www.trackyourplaque.com/blog/2011/08/one-hour-blood-sugar-key-to-carbohydrate-control-and-reversing-diabetes.html

I "was" once afraid of fat too until I had my cholesterol checked while eating 50-70% fat.

It's doesn't seem like you're doing a whole lot wrong, tbh.  Some bodies are just really stubborn about giving up fat!

Keep a food diary, keep at it, and then see where you stand after another 3 weeks.  Hopefully you'll see an improvement!

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!
