Why is the caveman diet making me very tired?
« on: September 08, 2009, 08:48:29 AM »
This is after 3 days of eating cereal in the morning, 2eggs/3 bacon, 3 mushroom, 2 satsumas, 3 tomatoes and some lettuce. I am knackered. The same happened to me last time i tried it and there was one day i woke up in the morning and could barely move. What am i doing wrong?

Caveman crunch.   ;D

I was pretty tired on days 2-3 myself. Tired and dizzy...

I figured it was detox or blood sugar adjusting, but it went away soon enough.

Be sure you are eating enough fats. They will give you stable energy throughout the day.

Sorry, but that's not paleo - no cereals are.  You'll need to cut out all grains, dairy, and legumes in order to be paleo.  No cereal, bread or pasta, since those are all grains; no peanut butter, since peanuts are a legume; no milk or cheese.  On the plus side, you can then eat as much meat, whole fruit, and green vegetables as you want.

Once you make those adjustments, and are actually eating a cave man diet, we may be able to help you.  I personally found that adding in some fruit helped with the blood sugar issue for me.

Grains cause fatigue in many people. More fat, and more meats/produce usually result in more energy.

To start with, if you are eating cereal you are not eating paleo.

The first 3-4 weeks were rough for me as well. Increasing your fat consumption really helps.

If you are eating lots of fruit and veges you will start detoxing. Make sure you drink heaps of water to help flush the toxins out, but you will feel bad while your body adjusts

I could barely function when I was 3-5 days in.  I was **so** tired.  It will pass.  It's just your body switching over to burning fat instead of carbs.

Cereal is not paleo.   ;)

I have done paleo way of eating for a long while. I have for various reasons broken away at times which made me feel unhealthy and lethargic and looked grotty but AS SOON AS I came back to eating paleo i felt great and had masses of energy.  This last period of eating - now with more wisdom and nutritional understanding i- i have ended up with so much energy i even want to go running. :)  I think the key is eating a smaller amounts  - we don't need huge portions to fuel most of our lifestyles - if eat too much our bodies naturally want to slow down to digest it - ever seen a cat that's just eaten a rabbit wnat to run round?
The sugar in fruit and that includes tomatoes can overload the system.  These modern fruits  are way different to the plants our ancestors would have chomped though, over thousands of years we people have been selecting sweeter, starchier, softer more succulent fruit  (and veg) - it's like more refined even though we pick it off the tree that way -  so we tend to get more sugar and starch from it and less fibre, often we don't chew it enough so not starting the digestive process correctly.

I started Paleo just over a week ago...I have NEVER had this much energy in my life.  I did however get a nasty sinus cold/chest cold & cold sore all in the first week.

I did go Paleo cold turkey, and could be detoxing my body...and although I am sick I feel FANTASTIC!!!

Stacey.

That thought had crossed my mind a few weeks back Mau.

A little experiment has been forced on me, am having a little trouble swallowing & cannot train atm, all things considered am feeling comparably better!

This should be a sticky.  I'm am reading lots of beginners that are experiencing this.  I know there is no perfect formula but its definitely common, and it's a bit scary when you don't know what to do.

Stacey, hope you get over your illness soon.  And welcome to the forum.  And to everyone who has a rough time in the first week- this is not uncommon.  Your body is having to make large adjustments because of the big changes in what you're eating.  Don't make the mistake of trying to cut out fats, which is common because we've been told for decades to reduce animal fats, red meat, etc.. what you need to cut out entirely are grains, cereals, dairy, processed foods, etc., like you'll see repeated often here.  I believe that to make the first week go more smoothly, you should concentrate on limiting the sugary fruits, and instead eat plenty of fresh vegetables, and plenty of protein and lots of healthful fats, i.e. the fats which are in red meats, fatty fish like salmon.  You may still have some discomfort during the transition, but eating plenty of protein and fats will smooth things over and keep you filled up.
