A few people on this thread have stated that extra virgin olive oil can't be used for cooking but no one has explained why - could someone explain the theory behind this please?

Basically, olive oil is not something that paleolithic men used.  Extraction requires a significant static infrastructure by paleolithic standards, though not by neolithic standards.  Paleo man likely stuck with fruit he could pick right off the tree and eat.

That said, olive oil is not nearly as bad as most other vegetable oils - corn oil or peanut oil, for example - and some people do use it if they don't have access to paleo oils like unprocessed animal fats.

How about "cold pressed" virgin coconut oil? The native way of extracting it is just letting young coconut milk stand till the oii seperates and floats to the top

I think most people on this site consider coconut oil to be the only paleo vegetable oil for this reason.  You don't even need to press it, really.

thanks warren but I was more interested in what people had said about if you do choose to use olive oil that evoo shouldn't be used for cooking - I've done a bit of reading and found it's to do with the low burning point

Gets smoky at quite a low temp. I've not found it to be a problem though.

I think there is a more technical answer, like it denatures and becomes a less healthy oil, but I'm not certain.

If you do want to use an oil, macadamia is very good and ok for higher temperatures.

How many fruits are recommended? I prefer them to veggies but know I have to transition to more veggies less fruit but I am looking for some guidelines as to how many fruits.

one to two if you are transitioning - but it would be better to posts your menu and include a bit about you - age range, activity and height kind of stuff. Activity and size play a part in what you need.

Thanks!
here goes..I am 53 years old, 5 feet tall, shot up to 146.5 since January (Dec I weighed 126) I am largely inactive due to fatigue from MS. I had begun Yoga until I fell and fractured a vertebrae last month. I had a nerve block injection this week and was able to go for a walk last night but only lasted 10 minutes due to knee pain. My knee is being looked at this week by an orthopedic specialist so hopefully I'll have some relief there and be able to walk and get back to yoga. That reminds me I need to schedule my Physical Therapy!
I appreciate all the advice and input around diet and staying honestly paleo.

You can have as much fruit as you want and still be paleo.

If you are trying to lose weight, the less fruit you eat, the better your chances.
