Alternating pushups and dips
« on: May 11, 2011, 02:03:06 PM »
Can I do pushups one day and dips the next or is it better to do themon the same day?

I've been alternating due to neck and back problems (degraded and painful discs)

But pushups and dips are working the same muscle, your triceps.

Yes you can alternate them.
Be aware that over developing your pushing muscles will make your neck worse.
If you're doing pushups you need to inverted rows. If you're dips you need to do chins
Then you have balance.
But pushups and dips are working the same muscle, your triceps.
They work more than your triceps

lol - can't do chins - inverted rows no problem

what can I do instead of chins - I do have a bar that I hang from because it relieves my back

The neck is a major painful problem - lying down to sleep is really uncomfortable

I've been eating Paleo for a while but only just starting on the exercise side of things. I like the idea of doing inverted rows. I found the following suggestion for a modified inverted row for women.

http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/modified-inverted-row

is it a good one to start with or should I try the traditional inverted row?

That's a great way to start. Move on to the traditional style asap though. Mix those with pushups and bodyweight squats and you are well on your way.
