Can't keep food down after a work out- suggestions?
« on: January 10, 2015, 07:26:16 PM »
Hello!! I was just wondering if I could get some feedback on a particular issue I have with running long distances. I love running, I do tough mudder obstacle courses and local 5k's and in general like doing difficult workouts. I have acid reflux and a hiatal hernia.. Which I'm not sure if they play into this, but I have found that after a hard work out, or a difficult run, distance or just lots of up hills, I can't eat. I get nauseas to the point where I throw up if I do eat. It's a bit annoying, and generally takes me a long time to able to eat- I have to eat mini bites slowly with lots of time in between. This also happens on very long all up hill hikes. So far my friend thinks my goal is to puke in every state rather than hike the most difficult mountains in every state. I haven't gone on a run this long since I've returned to a paleo diet, but I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for what I may be able to eat after a run that I can actually keep down. Do you think maybe just eating paleo will help with this? It's pretty annoying to finish a tough mudder and watch your friends gorge on the protien and nutrition they need and not be able to join them- I'm hoping for a solution! All suggestions are welcome :-).

Strict paleo with plenty of meat should strengthen the sphincter muscles after a few months, which will help prevent acid reflux.  You might try another 5k after that point and see what happens.

Macadamia nuts might be something easy to start with.

Thanks for the suggestion. I definitely plan to stay strict paleo. I'll see if it affects my acid reflux at all. So far it seems that I don't need to take such a high dose of my medicine- but again I haven't trained or run for a race or mud run in a few weeks because its been so cold. Ill definitely try the macadamia nuts to see if I can keep them down after running and long hikes. I'm hopeful!

Strict paleo indeed help in this kind of problems. Also you have to always check that you are well-hydrated before you start a long run or a heavy work-out. :D

You could check on your doctor on why you are throwing up after runs. Or you maybe hyponatremic since you are on a paleo diet.  Is there anything that you eat before you run? Might be something along those lines.

I've tried talking to doctors, and I wound up actually having to leave my old general practitioner because he told me I must be diabetic because my father had diabetes and then tried to send me to a surgeon to have my fall bladder removed with normal ball bladder scans and tests. (Even though all my blood tests for blood sugar came back PERFECT- and he checked every couple weeks...). I've given up on doctors advice since its getting me no where.
I've never thought of being too low on salt. I do eat on an overall low sodium diet just because I don't like salty things. I honestly don't really know what I eat before runs and working out. It's usually just whatever is available for me to eat quickly. I'll have to start paying attention to that.

One thing I learned after surgery is that extremely low blood sugar can be a cause of severe nausea. You might try a teaspoon of raw honey after a run to get your digestion back on track. While honey is not allowed on the very strictest of Paleo diets, it is allowed on some and we do all have to make slight adjustments to our diets to suit our body type and lifestyle. Hope this helps.

How about bone broth? It's more of a drink, but it gives you all of the nutrition of a good meal. I would try bone broth first, and I bet after regularly drinking BB for a while, your gut will be healed.
