exercise is bad for you?
« on: January 05, 2010, 05:13:36 PM »
all right...so now I am reading that exercise can be bad for you?  Like HIIT and lots of cardio can increase your cortisol which makes losing weight darn near impossible and injury highly likely?  Is this true?

What should I be doing?  I enjoy lifting weights just for my own enjoyment....it's the cardio part I detest!  I mean I walk a lot anyways (to and from work, to and from the park, to any store close by) and ride my bike.  That's just normal part of my life.  But 7 months ago I joined the gym and started weights....they really push cardio until you are crying to get off the machine and then doing your weights after...which has always frustrated me because I can lift so much more weight on the days I don't do cardio....

I dunno?!?!?

It sounds like you just read one poorly written article and are freaking out.

Stick to shorter workout sessions but very high intensity and you'll be fine.

right o!  thanks!

I do about 15-20 minutes on the ARC trainer with high resistance and keep my strides over 100.

Then I do a 3 day split workout (whole body, upper, then lower).  I've changed it up about every 4 weeks and I try to lift a heavier weight for my sets each week.

Circuits, timed circuits and complexes will fire up fat loss without doing "cardio".http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/timed_circuits_pace_yourself_for_maximum_fat_loss

Cardio lol.

If you're on Paleo diet you don't need to do all that "fat burning" crap. You'll lean off just from the diet and being physically active.

Short, intense workouts throughout the weeks. Replace that "cardiocrap" with some HIIT sprints. Sprint, rest, sprint, rest, rinse and repeat. Do swimming.

From what it sounds they have you set up to wear your body out, and then you'll make no progress.

I haven't been fat since highschool (7 years ago). I'm hovering around probably 11% BF. I haven't had it tested for 2 years but I'm a little less lean than I was the first time I had it done and came out like 9.5% something.

I'm considered "overweight" for my height, but most of it really is muscle and I'm a 33 inch waist.

I could be leaner if I did more HIITs and really hit the weights. But that's for when I have the extra money for winter athletic wear.

hey do you have more of these?  Or other circuits like this!?  This looks awesome and with my broken foot I could actually do a whole workout with out missing exercises that aggravate it!  Thank you so much for this link :-)

You may want to look into crossfit for circuit training options:

http://crossfit.com/

They usually post different routines on a daily basis and have a bunch of videos about the particular exercises.
Any idiot can get on a treadmill and watch TV and then take great pride in the fact they've exercised.

Yes, cardio is terrible for you. Jogging and walking and hiking and things of that nature are good for your lungs, but marathons and hours on the treadmill are bad.

Yea, the human body is not designed for long range cardio/running. We are meant for short bursts of power...

Who ever told you that has obviously never tried HIIT, or they were doing something very wrong...

Replace that "cardiocrap" with some HIIT sprints.
You don't consider HIIT to be cardio?

I really don't dig posts that seem to be an opinion presented as fact. Though that opinion may well be based in fact, you need to show proof of that.

Why? How?

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Cortisol is bad for you, so anything that raises cortisol is bad as well. Not that complicated.

A quick google search gives you this article: http://www.articlesbase.com/advice-articles/why-my-muscles-wont-grow-cortisol-stress-hormone-destroy-muscle-tissues-23700.html

I glanced through it, seems to have some decent information.
