question - borderline exercisegate
« on: January 30, 2010, 02:36:19 PM »
Hi!

So I went to the gym for the first time in 3 months today and did my program.  Now, the girl at the desk (who I'm friendly with) was all excited to see me and whatnot....but when I showed her what I was doing...she was all "that's it?!"  why don't you spin for a bit?

I told her I didn't want to do cardio and strength on the same day.  She's lost 100 lbs herself, but she did nothing but HIIT cardio for 1 year and lost all her weight (obviously with dietary changes too) and then now she's doing the weight training she said to build the muscle back on.

She said it's hard for your body to do both lose fat and build muscle at the same time.  I suppose this is a matter of debate among different types of trainers with different schools of thought...but this got me thinking about being obese as a "sickness" (yah what marika was talking about -- don't hit!) and so by just doing cardio (fat burning is what the desk girl called it) she "healed" herself over a year of good eating (basically she was paleo w/rice) and is now building muscle with heavy compound moves for strength training.  Her spin classes are by no means for sissies!  She works you very hard lots of sprints and high resistance.  She said she was doing this 3 times a week to lose her weight.

alright...have at it!  Wlfdg?  Is it true or not that you can only burn fat OR build muscle?  Spinclass is the one HIIT I could really push myself on as there's no impact on my dang foot.

I do both cardio and strength training.  My pictures I think speak for themselves.  To me it makes no sense whatsoever to not build muscle while losing fat.  As a person that works in physical therapy (physiotherapy for those outside the US) I could see this as a ticket to overuse injury and pain.  Building muscle helps to protect your joints and is a worthwhile activity.  Plus, muscle also is a calorie burner more so than fat.  Building muscle will help your metabolism.

If you do just cardio you will not just lose fat, but also muscle and losing muscle is not a good thing for the average person.

Does this mean it will take longer for the scale to move?  It might because muscle is more dense than fat, so it will make it seem like you are not losing weight, but you will notice that your jeans fit better, or your waist is smaller.  That means your body composition is better.  Who cares if the scale stays at 180 pounds as long as the body fat composition improves.  LIke this week I only lost 1 pound, but my BF went from 37.5% to 35.3% on mu home scale.  I'll take that :)

yes well this was my thought too....that muscle burns more at rest AND helps protect you.  I should stop second guessing myself as to look at the desk girl...you wouldn't want to look like her!  she's my height 5'7 and maybe 120 lbs...but she's rail thin...her face is gaunt...cheeks sunken....I mean she looks kinda sinewy like madonna looks?  do you know what I mean?  She's hardly someone I want to emulate!  I wanna be curvy and ripped!

I do both on the same day, weights in the morning mon/wed/fri and Tabata in the afternoon on the elliptical 6 days a week. I am losing fat and putting on muscle.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

wow samjohn!  you must be a fixture at your gym!  I don't have that kind of time for that much with two little monkeys at home and all the activities they do

I have an elliptical on the balcony and bench and weights in the shed.

That said the weights only take about half an hour, and tabata takes 11mins. Not a huge amount of time.

Can I join this thread?  I am trying to figure out how to get physically healthy again, but safely and slowly.  I want to be muscular but flexible, lean yet curvy.
What is the program you mention Sassenach?

I have been tempted to go back to gym and try spinning, same as you - the foot problems you have sound like my knee issues.  But - so much I am reading now says all that cardio does not really help much!

History - used to run a lot - 1/2 marathons, did do weights for strength, also tae Bo for fun, swimming, roller blades biking - anything outside and fun. Coming back from colon cancer in 2008 - lost a ton of weight, which meant also a ton of muscle.  By the time they finished up with me I was pitiful.  so in the last year - gained a lot of weight back eating whatever would stay down and stay solid - and with no exercise now I am just a blob.

Now I see hope - with Paleo I am losing yet feel so much stronger.
I am doing Pilates every other day for core stength and to build back my poor abdomen. I also have an elliptical - tried that Tabata....wow!  loved it and don't particularly want to go back to long sessions of cardio like I used to do.

So for now - is Pilates and Tabata going to help me?  Is there anything else out there that you might suggest?

I love to kayak, and want to be back in shape by spring so I can Blast the Bay (chesapeake...) also - want to stay away from blowing out my knees which all the running ruined.....

Let me know what you are doing!

Sassenach, if you are going to do spin make sure to get bike shoes.  If you don't there will be a lot of stress on the foot because it will bend a lot in a regular sneaker.  I often get sore feet after spin.

The only way to not lose muscle while trying to lose fat is to train to gain muscle. The gym attendant lost 100lbs. and not all of that was fat.

I did a little bit of that: lose weight first and then try to bulk up. I think it's not the best way to go. My experience and observations:

- Originally, when I started paleo, I was doing martial arts classes. I was losing mostly BF and water, I guess.  I dropped the classes around late Oct.
- I continued to lose weight through Dec. I did occasional HIIT  but not much. My arms became really skinny and I could still not see my abs nor other major muscles. I could feel my ribs, though. I calculated BF using some indirect measurements and it came out at above 15%. Probably not entirely accurate but definitely not low.
- I have gone back to exercising. Slowly, even after 6 sessions or so, I'm seeing some progress.
Any idiot can get on a treadmill and watch TV and then take great pride in the fact they've exercised.

Of course you can join!  Pilates and Tabata sound good to me....Pilates is lots of body weight exercises.  But Wlfdg would be a good one for other specific exercises.  I am doing compound moves with weights and spinning now.

Gypsygirl, You can accomplish a lot with Tabata especially first thing at the start of the day.

IMO- Continue doing Pilates to re-establish your structural integrity. When your physical confidence returns get back into the gym and start hitting the weights 2-3X a week. Stick to basic compound movements with free weights.

Thanks guys - I love the encouragement.
Did do Tabata today before breakfast, it is hard!

The pilates I do with a 'reformer' band, there are four pieces to keep me stabilizing and stretching, much like you would do on the real reformer machine.  I can really feel it working my core.

Sassenach this lose fat yet keep muscle is a real balance and I hope we can figure it out!
Warren  you hit the nail on the head with the physical confidence comment. Yeah I do feel like I worked so hard for physical fitness and then lost it.  somehow I will get it back!
