@ Destor:

You're absolutely right. I just eat carbs (fruit, coconut water) after heavy workouts because it helps me to recover and boosts anabolic hormones after training. I'm a firm believer in the amazing health benefits of saturated fats (lard, coconut oil) and animals products in general. They have transformed me from a constantly ill, 120lb-ish skinny fat, under-muscled grain eater into a 150lb, healthy and much more powerful individual while my bodyfat levels stayed mostly the same, i.e. I can still see the upper two of my abs. How phantastic is that?
And yes, I ditched all conventional cardio during the process. I sprint once a week, and walk a lot (hiking, walking my dogs) just for the pure sake of walking, not for any cardio effects. Cardio is a waste of time if you don't have any competitive goals in that area.

whatever you do - do NOT do crunches or ANY ab work ! ! !

Why are these bad? Would it bulk up the size of your stomach?

Thats exactly what I do too, carb load with veggies/fruits after a workout to promote anabolism.

Insulin sensitivity ftw

and yeah crunches will develop the muscles in that area.  I think a strong core is
paramount when it comes to having an overall great physique, so I do bicycle crunches and various types of leg raises.

Maintaining proper form while exercising should work your abs too.

WHAT!?

i suggest you pick up cycling - it will move most of your fat into the muscles on your thighs.
WTF!? This one is insane

Not a great choice for abdominal work. You are putting the stress on your hip flexors primarily with bicycle crunches and leg raises. Try Janda Situps. FAR more effective for abdominal work. Reciprocal Inhibition is the key!
Walking isn't exercise, it's locomotion!

interesting, I've never heard of these, going to give them a try.

Hanging leg raises and bicycle crunches have blown up my midsection though, will post pics later.

Abdominal definition does not come from training your abs.

I'm not just talking about body fat, my entire core has beefed up.

In fact after reading more about this I'm not sure if I want to isolate the rectus abdominis and obliques from the hip flexors, I would rather work both as a compound movement.

Developing the hip flexors as such can create lumbar strain and contribute to the development of an exaggerated lumbar lordosis.

I'm not doubting what you are doing is working. I know exactly what it's doing from a professional standpoint.

Want to really train your core? Hold overhead presses, locked out, until you sway.

yes.  but other than that it would accomplish precisely zero.  well, if you work REALLY REALLY hard at it maybe you can manage an injury, but for the most part just waste of time.
How do you come up with this nonsense?

i struggle to come up with an analogy to explain how idiotic doing ab work is.  the truth is that it is really hard to top the idiocy of it.  those suicide bombers who will blow up a bus so that their family will get paid and they will go to heaven ( in reality their family gets executed and they go nowhere ) - they MIGHT be contenders here, but i cannot say with certainty which is dumber though.
Your struggling? This is way over the top!

What is with the sudden influx of loonies?
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I blame Mark Sisson for popularizing the "caveman style eating" thing, and giving us an eternal september

You need to eat as much lean protein as you can afford down your face. Restrict carbs to morning and pre or post  workout. Do cardio to help lose the fat. Gaining strength/muscle should be your biggest priority - just hope you lose some fat in the process as well.

Protein is of great importance, yes, but your body needs saturated fats to function properly, especially if you restrict carbs to a minimum. I am absolutely convinced that the skinny fat look is a symptom of a bad hormonal environment, so I'd rather say it's all about optimizing hormonal function rather than doing mathematics about how much protein or calories to eat.
Skinny fat people (and I'm one of them) need to optimize their energy levels with a high intake of quality fats and protein, some carbs after high intensity exercise, good sleep and a realaxed (!) lifestyle. I think it's important to train hard, but enjoyable if you feel able to and to back off and eat on the other days.

I think skinny fat people should absolutely focus on muscle and strenght, because that's was boosts your metabolism and hormones in the long run. Focus on feeling stronger every day, and you will look stronger soon.

Concerning the cardio... just walk around and safe your energy for real efforts. Don't waste your time weakening your body.
