I actually have been doing reps to -1 of failure and found I recover faster and as a result, able to train more often.

You don't need a spotter to go to failure. There are ZERO exercises anyone needs a spotter for.
?You are kidding right?

I am not kidding....tell me what exercise needs a spotter. The only time I come anywhere near having a spotter is when a friend grabs the bar at the end of a set of skull crushers.

What's wrong with skull crushers?

I've been pinned under a loaded barbell plenty of times when I worked out at home, years ago. I would lie flat on the ground and bench press by myself. It was stupid, ineffective and dangerous.

I always have a friend standing nearby when I work out, but in theory he serves no purpose. But he always watches for safety's sake.

i.e. a spotter

and skull crushers are an isolation movement, hence my comment.  much better to focus on big compound movements

Of course, big compounds are the best.

I've been stuck under the bench press a few times.  usually a big beefcake is walking by smirking as I am trying to figure out how to get out of this jam.  He comes over and picks it off my chest like it was a newspaper or something

How can you go to failure without a spotter? Failure is an absolute cessation of performance.

We call that a spotter.

Nobody needs a spotter. No one needs to go to failure.

I'm a firm believer in the "leaving one in the tank" training theory. If you feel like you haven't worked hard enough do another set or two. Add weight.

Training to failure is sure way to sustain an injury.
