When is the best time to exercise?
« on: October 02, 2011, 02:50:11 AM »
Hi I'm new to this way of eating and seem to have adjusted pretty well to the food at three weeks in - although I'm still waiting for that hit of energy, I find I feel really tired.

Having read through lots of new information on different sites and books, I would like to know when is the best time to exercise??

I've always thought morning for fat lose and afternoon for fitness - not so sure this is right now.

I was reading on the leptin resistance site that it is better to eat and then workout so that you fast overnight - and when you eat the body stops burning fat.  BUT I thought that the whole point of weight training was to build muscle so that the body would continue to burn fat hours after exercise...

Soooooo feeling a little confused and would like to know what others here think/do?

ps love the forum!!

So if I feel 100% morning and evening - which is going to give me the most benefit?

What Andrew said is true, exercising does keep you active throughout the day. But if you don't have time in to exercise in the morning, add an apple in to your breakfast. I did a report about how an apple in the morning is a more sufficient source of energy than a cup of coffee. Some people claim it's a myth, but I've eaten an apple every morning ever since and I notice that I have significantly less energy throughout the day when I don't have an apple. Like others have said, the best time to exercise is whenever is best for you, but if you don't have the energy to do so later in the day, eating an apple in the morning might help you.

I'm at 100% in the early afternoon (really anywhere in between lunch and dinner). I understand that is not the most ideal time for people who work a 9-to-5, but I have found that time to be the most ideal for my body.

Work out when you feel at your best.

Also, metabolically if you start working out (even when you feel tired) you will find that you have more energy. You need to use energy to make energy. Exercising ramps up the oxidative phosphorylation portion of the ATP synthase portion of your metabolism. ATP is what amounts to cellular energy, its like fuel for your car. Once you start exercising, you ramp up ATP production, which makes you feel more energetic. Spending energy creates energy :)

Early morning is a best for exercise. Mostly people and doctors advice to do exercise in the morning. In morning there is a need of activity which keep body active all the day. And it is better for body organs...

The best time will vary for each person.  I'm an early morning guy.  There is evidence that most people are stronger in the afternoon.  That may be true in my case but I know I have less stamina. The more you train at a particular time, the more you will acclimatize to that time.  I suppose that for overall fitness, that would mean you should randomize the workout time.  That way you're ready to go at any time.

You can't make a blanket statement like that. I'm completely useless in the morning. Performance for me peaks early afternoon.

I'm a big proponent of fasted state training. My personal gains while training in the fasted state are slightly better, and there is a little bit of research to back this. However, what really sold me on fasted training is how it utilizes the increased catecholamine levels to up fat oxidation. The combo of increased muscle anabolism and fat catabolism is perfect for someone who wants to gain muscle and lose fat. Aka, this guy!
