Arcane's Food Journal
« on: July 18, 2012, 05:22:43 PM »
Hey all, I tried Paleo a few years ago (3? 4?) straight after coming off vegetarianism.  I even had an account here.  It didnt last too long.  Main reasons 1. Alcohol. I was drinking a lot.  I've mellowed out now a bit ;) 2. Expense.  I was eating grass-fed Bison steaks to the tune of $20 a pop all the time and huge slabs of tuna and salmon.  Delicious yes, but also wicked expensive.

So I'm giving this another try, starting tomorrow.

Breakfast:
Coffee with Coconut Milk (not actual coconut milk, a milk substitute based on it)
2 (cage free, omega) 5 strips of turkey bacon

Lunch:
Sweet potato chips baked with chili powder and pepper
Chicken breast with lemon, garlic and oregano

Snack:
Celery stick with almond butter
A small glass Coconut Dream.. Too sweet for my taste

Dinner:
Same as lunch :(
I thought I had Tuna, apparently I dont.  Steak isn't defrosted and my attempts to make home-made mayo for a chicken salad ended in epic fail.

Snack:
Handful of almonds

Here's my shopping list.  I totally forgot the bison (so much for chili!), but picked up some wild shrimp on sale and salmon steaks instead of canned.  Couldnt find kelp noodles.  Need to find some shrimp recipes, it's a huge frozen bag.

Produce:
Hot peppers
Mushrooms
parsley
Celery
Onions (yellow)
Parsley
Aspargus
Zucchini
Berries
Nuts

Dairy:
Omega Eggs
Milk Substitue

Meat
1-3/4 lb ground bison (elk, venison, or beef may be substituted)
2 double rib lean pork chops
2 chicken livers
Chicken Wings
Canned Salmon
Frozen fish

Oils/Spices:
Olive
Coconut
Cayanne

Misc:
1 (12 oz) jar salsa
1 (8 oz) can diced tomatoes
Kelp Nioodles?

Tonight I have a date with a vegan girl I made before going Paleo.. we're going to a vegan restaurant.  That should be challenging!

I would eat before the date! They'll probably have a salad bar though. Have you told her what you eat and why? Vegans tend to get very defensive in my experience.

Have you tried grilling the shrimp?

I was a vegetarian for 10 years (tried vegan for a week or so), so I'm kinda familiar with the whole idea, and I understand it from a moral perspective.  Personally, I was eating vegetarian 'junk food' (pizza etc), beer, and constantly getting sick.

It's an Asian vegan restaurant, I checked out their items, they have mushrooms in pho oyster sauce and a sea weed salad.  That sounds like a safe bet.  A block of tofu or seitan once in a great while wont kill me, but I'm certainly done with it being a main source or protein!

Maybe we can bond over our distaste of dairy (well, milk products) ;)

I want to, I actually dont own a grill.  I have a patio I could definitely use a small one on though.  Might pick one up over the weekend.  Was thinking of George Foreman but a 'real' grill would be more fun and better tasting!

If the scale is to be believed, I'm down to 182 from 186.  Probably water weight.  Been working out like a mofo.

Breakfast:
Small ice coffee (hey moving in the right direction) with coconut milk
2 omega eggs scrambled with shitake mushrooms

Lunch:
Grilled chicken over garden salad.  No dressing.  Picked up 'Olive Oil Light' by mistake.. which is mostly soybean oil!
I have a feeling I'm going to be too starved w/o snacks to workout tonight

Snack:
Handful of almonds and walnuts

Dinner:
Pork chop stuffed with chicken liver from the Paleo Diet.  Pretty much followed the recipe verbatim, added a bit of wine to the saute since I'm a lush.
Steamed Zucchini with pepper and Dulse (a type of seaweed).
A few glasses of wine.

So a few things:
I was called to work suddenly and that lunch totally didnt satisfy me, I was STARVING.  I need Paleo snacks.  Even the trailmix in the snack machine is all peanuts and yogurt chips.  I was going to order some pemmican from US Welness Meats but they have a $75 & 7 lb minimum, plus I'm not usually home to get deliveries. Hmm..

And I purchased 2 chops and livers for cooking (I'll eat the other one tomorrow) but the livers come in buckets of like 12. WTF do I do with these? Add them to a breakfast scramble?  My only experience with liver has been chopped on crackers.

--

Edited to add:
Pork chops a little dry, 25 @ 350 is too long, or perhaps they would benefit from a marinade first?
Ordered some Tanka Bars and Grass-Fed Nick's Sticks for snacks.  Still on the fence about a dehydrator.. my place is so small and my dog is so hungry!

Breakfast:
Small ice coffee black
2x Starbucks bacon & egg sammiches, minus bread, minus cheese.
I feel bad about wasting bread, threw a few pieces to the dog, although his diet was 'grain free' before mine.
Still he eats left over pizza off the side-walk when ever he gets a chance, I think he'll be ok!

Lunch:
Stirfry: Sweet Potato, Celery, Cauliflower & Shrimp w/ Garlic and Ginger in olive oil.

Ugh. I don't think I cooked those shrimp well enough.. No me gusta.

Dinner:
Total cheat. Pizza. Beer. Onion Rings. :(

Breakfast:
Med Ice coffee black

Snack:
Cup of almond milk

Lunch:
Big salad w/ steak tips and bacon on top, EVO for dressing.

Man I dunno what to eat.  I was gunna order sushi and get a fuckton of sashami but after yesterdays shrimp experience, not really feeling raw seafood at the moment.  I've got nothing left to eat in the house except some fruits and vegetables.  Going to defrost the freezer this weekend and pack it with MEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAT (that's what she said?)

Dinner:
Well I wasn't feeling the sea food thing.
3 tequilas.. yeah this needs to stop.
I ordered delivery a half rack of ribs and a steak bomb sub minus cheese.
Ribs were slathered in BBQ sauce (usually a fair bit of sugar) but yeah cant let ribs go to waste, ate steak bomb minus bun.

Not sure weight is really going anywhere. Not sure I care. My step-mom said I looked great and the barista was extra flirty this morning.  I can feel my stomach has flattened and my chest expanding.  Really fucking sore from yesterday at the gym, I hadnt done much leg lifting/back in a loooong time.

Breakfast:
Med Ice Coffee.
Inside of a bacon and egg sammich

Snack:
Almond Milk

Lunch(?): Organic hot-dog, pickle, tanka bar.  Tanka bar is good but TINY.

Dinner: Ugh. Let's not talk about this.  No more booze. srsly.

Breakfast:
Mug o' coffee w/ almond milk

Lunch:
4 bacon, 3 omega eggs.

I'm kind of a retard after I havent eaten and then worked out.  I tried to pour boiling bacon fat into tupperware.  About 2 seconds later it ate a hole through the bottom. Luckily I realized was going on instantly and put it in the sink so no injures. I'm such an idiot!  ALL THAT DELICIOUS FAT GONE DOWN DRAIN :(  I want to order beef tallow but $75 and 7 lbs is kinda prohibitive when I'm never home.
