Athena's Food and Sleep Journal
« on: August 13, 2012, 09:30:17 AM »
So I have noticed that some days I wake up famished, and others I can IF until lunch no problem. My sleep has been erratic, and so I'm going to log that too and see if maybe I find a correlation.

Monday 8/13/12

Slept from 3:40am-7:05am

Breakfast:
8am
5-6 smallish organic strawberries
Leftover Juan Pollo (Mexican style grilled chicken) breast, no skin, about 1/3 of the breast was left.
(as a note, I didn't remove the skin and not eat it, I love skin and when I get/make chicken I always end up eating all the skin in the first meal because I like it too much lol)

snack:
10am
6 more strawberries

Lunch will be:
11:30am
Raw baby spinach salad with
Canned pink salmon
2-3 hard boiled eggs (I don't think the salad bar uses omega-3 eggs, so I might start leaving those off, but I'm going to ask the Mother's Market that I go to for lunch if they are or not)
small amount of shredded carrot
shredded beet
3 cucumber slices
1 small ladle of honey mustard dressing (has canola oil in it, but I've decided this will be the only time I eat canola oil and it's such a small amount I'm just not going to freak over it)
My salad in total usually weighs between .75-.9 lbs with the majority of the volume coming from the spinach, but most of the weight coming from everything else.

Dinner:
6pm
1/2 3/4 lb of ground lamb made into patties and cooked on the foreman grill seasoned with dill, onion powder, and  Mrs. Dash garlic and herb seasoning mix
Green cabbage cooked in the lamb drippings from the foreman grill and a little butter since there wasn't enough fat from the lamb alone to cook the cabbage. Also seasoned with dill. I don't know the exact amount as I didn't measure but I'd guess it was 2 cups before it was cooked.

slept from 8pm-6:30am

Tuesday 8/14/12

Breakfast:
7:15am
2 german brats (made at Sprouts, no fillers used, only meat spices/herbs - and I avoid the sweet varrieties)

Snack:
10:15am
3 small and 1 medium strawberries

Lunch:
11:30am (this is always earlier than I'd like, and even earlier some days, grrr)
Tri-tip lettuce wrapped with avocado and tomato and mayo

Dinner:
6:30pm
Ground Lamb again, but with about 1 oz of goat cheese cooked in the middle of the patty
Steamed and lightly sauteed asparagus in garlic and butter

Wednesday 8/15/12

Slept 11:30pm-6:30am

Breakfast:
7:15am
3 Scrambled omega-3 eggs with seasoning and baby spinach sauteed in bacon grease

8:30am onward Green tea/Mint tea mix - no sweetener, two travel mugs full so far (not sure how many oz the mug holds, 12 maybe?)

Lunch:
11:30am
1 large grass-fed beef shank with yummy marrow seasoned with onion powder and dill and generic "steak and roast" seasoning from Trader Joe's
4 medium and 2 small organic strawberries (posted photo with chapstick for size reference)

Dinner (planned to be pan fried swordfish and steamed broccoli) - photo will be updated after that occurs

That plan went out the window after needing to get an oil change on the car and it taking longer than I thought. I decided we'd go out instead.

Ended up at one of my favorite places for meat, an Argentinean restaurant. The meal we get there is a "dinner for 2" which could easily feed 4 with good appetites. It comes with a hunk of some kind of steak (can't remember the name of the cut), a hunk of skirt steak (but I trade this in for extra sweetbreads), the aforementioned sweetbreads (brains), 3 different sausages (not Paleo I'm pretty sure, but that's eating out for ya), and two beef short ribs (I usually only see this cut in Korean or Hawaiian BBQ joints - so it's nice to have a  non-sweet option of eating these) I love the blood sausage and my daughter won't touch it even not knowing what it is, she just doesn't like it. And same for the sweetbreads. Sweet! Morrrrre for Me!

The photo shows what my plate looked like initially, but then I ended up eating about 3 more pieces of sweetbreads and a good size side salad which was green leaf lettuce, thin sliced raw white (I think) onions, cucumber, and a chimichuri type vinaigrette as the dressing.

We had this with iced pomegranate raspberry green tea - which is delicious.

Thursday 8/16/12

Slept: 12:00am-6:50am

Breakfast:
8am
Leftover dinner consisting of 2 small and 1 large slice of sweetbreads (brain), and two sausages (again, probably not paleo)
aprox 25 smallish blueberries
first travel mug of green/mint tea as soon as it cools :)

Lunch:
11:30pm
Large grass-fed beef shank with marrow, same as yesterday's lunch
Strawberries - I wasn't paying attention to size or quantity - I think about 8 smallish and 2 medium and 1 largeish

another travel mug of green+mint tea blend plus 2 half litre bottles of spring water

Dinner Should be the fish I defrosted yesterday, but I'm having guests over after dinner and I don't want the house smelling all fishy. I hope it will still be ok to cook tomorrow! It will likely end up being more leftover meat from my dinner yesterday (yes, there's really that much left over from a "meal for two"!) and maybe some eggs and broccoli.

Dinner:
5:30pm
Market Broiler restaurant: Fish trio, salmon, trout (I think that's what it was, if I recall correctly), and plain shrimp. Veggies (squash of some kind, carrots, a tiny amount of broccoli - next time I'll ask for all broccoli)

Had people over for games and they brought alcohol. I'm not a huge drinker, but the guy I'm seeing was being kind and thought of me and brought ciders so I could have something to drink since beer is off limits. I ended up drinking the majority of a large bottle of cider (I think it was around 26oz?) I'll have to look at the bottle when I'm home again.

To bed at 3am. I know...

Friday 8/17/12

Sleep: 3am-6:40ish

Breakfast:
8:00am
Leftover beef from a couple nights ago that I intended to eat for dinner last night.
1 travel mug of coffee with 3 individual serving coffee mates (2 french vanilla, 1 irish creme). I Needed that coffee after the limited sleep, and I can't drink coffee straight, and I didn't grab a can of coconut milk when I left the house this morning. So such is life. Can't be a zombie at work.

Well I didn't keep track of what I ate in detail over the weekend and don't want to try recalling from memory.

So we'll just pick up here

Tuesday, 8/21/12
Slept:12am-6:40am

*as a note, I got broken up with last night by my favorite guy I'd been dating, and am really trying to avoid all my usual emotional pitfalls of eating and spending money to try to feel better - so I decided to IF this morning, and maybe through lunch if I can, although I don't think I'm going to make it through lunch.*

So far 1 half litre of water.

Lunch:
11:40am

Salad pictured below:

Dinner:
6pm
T-bone steak and salad with ranch dressing and some melon - probably about a cup and a half worth.

Snack:
9pm?
2 hard boiled eggs. Was cooking a few for the next day and these cracked, and I didn't think it would be good to keep them that way, so I ate them.

Wednesday 8/22/12

Slept 11pm-7am (I just did Not want to get out of bed this morning, still depressed)

Breakfast:
7:30am
1 8-10oz rib eye (non-grass fed unfortunately)

Snack:
10am
2 hard boiled eggs

Lunch:
11:30am
Another rib eye steak

Snack: (not enough food at lunch)
2:00pm
1 organic granny smith apple
aprox 6 oz organic red grapes

Should hold me over until dinner. I tried looking for some quick meat, but the closest market to me is a Mother's Market which is very pro-vegan and they don't seem to have any ready-made meat. I even considered grabbing some cheese, but for some reason thought the fruit sounded like the better option, even if they are carby - at least it's natural food that grows. I don't know... I haven't had any other carbs today so I'm probably ok in that realm.

Dinner:
5pm
Rib eye steak

Dinner 2
8:30pm
(went to a social gathering where we were required to order something $8 or more at the restaurant. In hind sight I could have gotten a salad to go and kept it for breakfast or lunch the next day, but I didn't think of that at the time so I had a second dinner - but it's a good thing I didn't really have a what I would consider a full meal earlier)
Salad made up of romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar (I forgot to tell them to hold the cheese), avocado, hard boiled egg, grilled chicken, and tomato. I ordered ranch on the side but only used a little on my tomato wedges becuase with the avocado I didn't need any dressing for the rest of the salad - which I love.
I also had about 5-6 small cups of coffee, each with a flavored creamer in it. I was yawning at 7pm and it was a social gathering so I didn't want to be all sleepy.

Athena,

I'm sorry to hear about your personal issues, but time will eventually heal the situation.

In the meantime, if you remain healthy through your diet and exercise, the duration of that healing time will be reduced, I can assure you that.

So, get up and sprint up a hill. Even if you do it only once, you will feel at least little better...

Side Note: The salad looks great! Definitely a perfect example of a wonderful Paleolithic meal!

Stay strong, this is a good opportunity to prove your will power, for everyone who live healthy lifestyle goes through depressing or traumatic events that test their ability to continue down the right track.

                                                                       Go do a sprint haha,

                                                                                                 Zensenji

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement Zensenji. I'm not much of a runner, but I've been keeping with my walks at work and not going to hole up. I have plans to go out tonight and tomorrow probably as well with another guy I've been seeing. Hopefully that will cheer me up :P

That salad was quite delicious. Bacon makes everything yummy. And avocado :)

Thursday 8/23/12

Slept 3am-7:05am (hit that snooze button too many times)

Breakfast
7:30am
Didn't have time to cook a full breakfast so I just cooked up some bacon - about 4-5 slices. The bacon I get is from Trader Joes and is the "bits and ends" because it's sold a lot cheaper. There often are normally cut slices in a package, but usually it's just like it says, chunks and pieces, so it's hard to judge exactly how many traditional slices I might be eating. But I don't really care about the quantity too much myself. I once had a day where I cooked up a whole pound of this bacon and it's all I ate all day LOL
8am at work - 1 travel mug of coffee with 2 creamers. I need to bring in some coconut milk so I have it on hand!

Lunch
11:30am
Same salad I had Tuesday: Shredded iceberg lettuce, chopped egg, tomato, bacon, grilled chicken, and avocado with olive oil and vinegar.

Dinner:
Rib eye (last of that batch, won't be seeing this on my list again probably any time soon again)
2 large baby bok choi steamed and sautéed with chopped bacon.

2 large iced coffees with splenda

Friday 8/24/12

Slept: 1am?-7:25am! Sooo overslept.

Breakfast:
8am
grabbed a large avocado and container of raspberries - breakfast at my desk.

Lunch:
11am
4 baked chicken legs with herbs and lots of garlic, baked in grass-fed beef broth/drippings from another previous meal. It was super tasty and fall off the bone tender, I've never seen cleaner bones.

Dinner:
6pm?
Chicken lettuce cups and turkey burger sans bun at Lazy Dog Cafe

12PM
Snack while gaming: raw broccoli, 2 medium sized cubes of watermelon, about 20 grapes

Skipping the weekend because it was full of cheats and I am aware of them but don't need to set a bad example for anyone else. We'll just leave it at that.

Today was also not totally Paleo, but here we go anyhow:

Monday, 8/27/12

Slept 3am-7:15am

Breakfast
7:45am while driving in to work
seasoned ground beef, aprox 1/3 lb (cooked up a full lb and tossed it in a to-go container with a lid and just ate until I had enough) Dill, onion powder and "steak and chop" seasoning

Lunch:
11:30am
a few bites of the ground beef, just wasn't feeling very hungry, walked the rest of my lunch break. I got in a little over a mile, that felt pretty good.

Added because I forgot until I saw the photo I took in my phone:
Second (or proper) lunch at 2pm
Small green salad with the insdes of a sandwich and the bread and cheese tossed. So tomato slices and turkey meat (not the desicated and pressed type, but good whole stuff)

Dinner: (this is where things went a little awry)
6pm
Leftover chicken wings and steamed broccoli with the last bit of organic goat cheese I had in the fridge
I think it was 6 garlic parmesean and 6 teriyaki wings I mean it's not a Horrible cheat in my opinion, but I'm not going to kid myself into thinking it's OK.

Slept 8pm-10pm
By 7:45pm I was sitting with my laptop and nodding off. I don't know if it's the laptop usage, or if that's when I'm really ready to be going to sleep and I'm normally able to push through the tiredness, but tonight I decided to give in and go to bed with my daughter at her 8pm bedtime. I rested really well and then some noise woke me up (and normally I don't wake easily once asleep, so I don't know what was up with that either) But it got me up, and so here I am. Hopefully I can get back to sleep again soon. The sleep I already got was really good sleep though.

I had a snack of about 1 cup of cantaloupe at about 10:30pm

Tuesday, 8/28/12

Slept 8pm-10pm and 12:30am-7:00am

Breakfast
7:30am
about 4-5 slices of bacon
2 eggs fried in the bacon grease

Lunch
11:30am
Lunch was crazy on the go, I had to run jumper cables to my dad and still eat. So I was driving down the road with a lambcop in hand ripping into it with my teeth. I probably looked both uncouth and insane at the same time.
Whatever, that lambchop was delicious!
Also had a handful of blueberries while I was heating up the lamb, and then was still pretty hungry when I got back to my desk so I ate a whole bunch more blueberries. I probably had about 8 oz total. Sheesh.

Slept 6pm-7:15pm

Dinner 7:45pm
3 baked chicken legs, and a pile of sauteed bok choi with chopped bacon

Shoot I missed journaling yesterday, I'm going to try to recall what I ate from memory.

Wednesday 8/29/12
Slept 12am-7:00am

Breakfast:
7:30am
4 fried eggs with salt, pepper and onion powder
3 Medium 1 small strawberries
8am at work
about 1-2oz of blueberries

Through the day: 3 travel mugs worth of coffee with coconut milk (yay! I finally remembered to bring it)

Lunch:
11:30am
Salad from Mother's Market salad bar, Mainly spinach but also a little spring mix, I wish I hadn't gotten that because it apparently had some baby chard which I find very bitter and not enjoyable. Shredded beets, shredded carrot, honey mustard dressing and canned pink salmon
10 red grapes

Dinner:
6pm
Made a big batch (2 lbs) of taco meat with ground lamb, onions sauteed in drippings from chicken I baked a couple nights prior, and canned fire roasted tomatoes.  Delicious.

Snack:
10pm?
15-20 red grapes
I was having a taste for bacon, but I felt like that was going overboard and indulgent so I opted for the grapes.

Thursday 8/30/12

Slept:
1am-6:45am

Breakfast:
7:40am while driving to work
Leftover lamb taco meat

Early lunch:
10am
More lamb taco meat. I dropped my container and spilled at least half of it on the ground :( :( :( What a waste!
First mug of coffee of the day, with coconut milk. Probably my only mug while at work as I'll be going to a coffee shop with a date and his friends later tonight.

I need to make sure I do these daily as I cannot remember what I ate Thursday night now...
