Bonker's Progress - A journal
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:42:15 PM »
It might take several days to get this thing going but I'll post now what I plan.

I'm going to try and post once a day with my morning weight-in and images and ingredients list of all my prepared meals. Snacks will probably be omitted.

Bonker,
What do you weigh now? Will snacks be omitted from your intake or just from the journal? Best!

Bonker,

I'm starting at 178cm(5' 10" ish) and about 255lb. I'm big-boned and muscular under all this fat so my target - for now - is about 200lb. I have been as heavy as 285lb a few years ago. I suppose I can include my snacks in the journal but I'm not planning to snap pictures of them; which is what I meant.

I would target a certain body fat %, rather then weight. This is because depending on how much you eat and train you can swing weight quite a bit, even if you are keeping body fat relatively constant. For eg., when I first started paleo I dropped all the way down to 130lbs, but was still relatively fat at 14 -15%. After adding some training, I gained roughly 10 - 15lbs and dropped 1 - 2% of body fat to 12-14%.

As a rough guide:
Healthy-ish for adult men: 15% body fat.
Abs showing: ~10% body fat.

If you want to measure there's always the cheap plastic calipers which you can buy online. They aren't precise machines, but they are useful to track progress and to give you an idea of where you stand.

Whatever muscle you have will be reduced unless you add training. That's the way humans are optimized: muscle is "expensive" to maintain. The muscle you won't need to lug around your extra weight will be eliminated, unless you keep training.
Any idiot can get on a treadmill and watch TV and then take great pride in the fact they've exercised.

From other posts I gather that diabetes is the main driver here health wise?

Fatty meat, some veg, minmise fruit. No more diabetes.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I'm gonna do it right for sure. Whatever I'm supposed to avoid, I will. The right combination of correct foods will be more difficult to discern.

I recently finished my bachelors degree and my student budget for the past four years has killed my ability to eat right. It was a tough call to return to school after so many years but I'm glad I finished and now have my electronic engineering degree.

It's true I'm seeking a lifestyle change due to diabetes type II. I was diagnosed 5 years ago and for three years, managed to keep it diet controlled. But once my savings was depleted and I had to start looking for creative ways to fill the cupboard, the quality of the food plummeted.

I'm actively seeking a full-time position in an engineering department and have full confidence I will get on track with paleo within a couple weeks. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions and I'm looking forward to becoming a contributing member here.

I find exercise helps willpower to eat right. I flew through training today  after just a few days of strict paleo, whereas I was struggling last week to do any exercise at all, probably because of the poor quality food I was eating. You'll probably find your desire to eat junk gets less when you feel good from training.

Lunch today(no pic):
1 7oz. can tuna in water
1 T. mayo
squirt of mustard
small handful of almonds

Tasted delicious! I realize the mayo is an issue and I'll learn to make my own soon.
