OK thanks ccg.
I guess I'll have to do some research to find somewhere nearer Palmers Green.
There is a v small farmers market here on Sunday -no idea what they sell, I'll have a wander by.

tue food

brunch
chicken liver
egg
small parsnip w creamed coconut, mashed
broccoli w butter
2 small beetroot

dinner
salmon steak
2 purple carrots

an onion
couple of macadamia

am trying to eat 50-70g carbs a day but damn, it's pretty hard!!!  I'm aiming for roughly a 20-40-40 carbs/protein/fat macronutrient breakdown, as I need to increase both carbs and protein to help my thyroid issues.

been a little more lax with eating recently and am reviving the food journal as an attempt at accountability!

Notes - was banned from my doctor from eating less than 1400 cals and 50-100g of carbs a day after over a year of amenorrhoea.  After 3+ months of less fat and more carbs (fruit and root veg) and protein I finally had a period.  I will let my cycle stabilise for 2-3 months before attempting any kind of weight loss or carb reduction.  My current weight is about 115 pounds, goal weight is 105.  I'm 5'1''

8th feb
3 carrots raw
2 celery sticks raw
brussels sprouts w coconut oil
2 beetroot
tenderstem broccoli w butter
6 dates
2 duck eggs scrambled

dinner
chicken liver pate
slowcooked lamb (a very large amount)

9th Feb
11am - 2 dates, broccoli with goat butter, carrots with goat butter, celery raw, cocoa
7pm - 2 beetroot, chicken liver fried in coconut oil, roast together - parsnips, brussells sprouts, 2 chicken thighs.
10pm - not paleo - a cocktail

Hey Celticcavegirl! Good to see you back. It's because of you I found caveman forum. Was looking for before/after pics of paleo transformations and yours came up and then caveman forum. So I must thank you. Nice work by the way.

Good luck with your health issues. Could you eat more calories but exercise more? Good to hear your body is getting back to normal. Will be staying tuned in!

Oh dear, does that mean that I'm lurking in google images somewhere?!

I really do need to exercise more.  I've never been sporty in my life and finding the motivation to walk 2x20 minutes in sub zero London temperatures to/from the gym to bore myself silly doing weights alone is difficult...I guess I'm just lazy and I really don't like exercise!  Maybe time to set myself a 30 day challenge re: exercise...

I feel a lot better (mainly peace of mind) now that I've got my cycles back.  Carbs and sugar are pretty vilified on this forum (including, in the past, by yours truly) but I think it's clear that there is such a thing as too low carb and the general advice given out to ladies to cut all carbs and fruit can be a little misguided in some cases!

I kind of thought that advice was specifically for women trying to lose weight, but maybe that's just how I frame it.  Still, now that you've discovered for us how to fix the amenorrhea, getting it for a while might not be an issue.

I also wonder whether women who are obese would lose their periods from a very low carb diet, or whether it's just for women who don't have a lot of fat reserves.

Yes sorry, that's what I meant!

The way I see it from my research is that in my case (and in many others) it's related to leptin and thyroid hormones.  Very low carb results in the body going into starvation mode and have very low levels of leptin, which in turn results in not enough active T3 and an excess of rT3 and T4 (an alternatively theory is that the liver is too knackered from ketosis to convert rT3 to active T3) and the hypothyroidism causes amenorrhoea and a weight loss stall (which I had last winter when I was eating 900-1100 cals daily for over 2 months and didn't lose a pound).  This theory is supported by the fact that normal treatment of hypothyroidism does not help hypothalamic amenorrhoea - because of course there is nothing actually wrong with the thyroid gland!  Injection of leptin apparently does help but is a 'fringe' treatment

I think in overweight women amenorrhoea is less of an issue because the body doesn't go into 'starvation mode' so readily, and also the fat cells produce oestrogen.  Certainly the numerous reports I've read online of hypothalamic amenorrhoea following very low carb were in women who were not obese...in fact low carb is recommend for obese women, especially because of their risk of PCOS

13th Feb

Brunch
2 dates
venison stew
brussels sprouts

snack
raspberries

dinner
1 mackerel
broccoli and carrots
4 dried cherries, 4 macadamia nuts
slice 'paleo brownie'

Yeah, I went there.  "Paleo" brownies.  I was curious.  However, turns out that there's a reason that I've always heaped scorn on such creations - because they're fucking disgusting!

(ingredients for the brownie - ground almonds, baking powder, coconut oil, cocoa powder, honey, coconut milk, spices, salt, dried cherries, macadamias, 85% chocolate.  Maybe it could have been nice but I would have had to have added a hell of a lot more honey).

Bring on the meat...today's find in the butcher, grass fed lamp rump, £10 for 9 steaks.  Big thick stripe of fat down the back.  Yum
