CrazyKell's 28 days
« on: July 04, 2011, 05:48:05 AM »
So today is Day 1 of Paleo for me.  I've done the research, and now I start.  I'm excited and not even a little bit nervous.  I'm allowing myself 1 open meal a week and have completely cut coffee, sugar, and diet coke (that one will be the hardest).

Starting weight:  199.6 lbs.  (will not weigh again until 28 days later).

Breakfast:
2 eggs
1/2 avocado

Snack:
1 oz almonds
1/2 avocado

Lunch:
salad
   -grape tomatoes
   -mesclun mix lettuc
   -shredded carrots
   -shredded cabbage
-roasted turkey breast (about 4 oz)
dressing
   -1 oz olive oil
   -lemon juice
   -spices

Evening:
-raw broccoli with coconut milk and garlic
-stirfy with red peppers, mushrooms, garlic, beef, and coconut milk
  -turkey slices

You are falling into a trap with too little protein and definitely not enough animal fat.

I realize I don't have enough protein today, but didn't have time to cook my meat last night so this was the best I could do.  The only local store that sells grass fed beef and good chicken has limited hours.  So I'm doing Walmart Paleo until I can get to that store.

How do you suggest I up the protein and/or animal fat?

I plan on making my own beef jerky to have protein throughout the day.

forget anything you have read that advises you to eat lean protein (e.g. turkey breast) and "healthy fats" such as nuts, avocado and olive oil.

Chicken thighs, roast in extra fat >> chicken breast
80% ground beef >> 95% lean ground beef
salmon, mackerel, trout >> cod, prawns
eggs scrambled in lard or ghee > boiled eggs
veggies roast/sauteed in tallow, lard or ghee > veggies on their own
macadamia nuts or coconut > almonds

Beef jerky is not the most ideal snack, as it is low-fat and very salty.  It's better to eat more fat (or more anything) at meals and go without snacks!

It's pretty easy to get lots of animal fat, just get the fattiest cuts of meat!
beef - 80% ground, fatty steak, stewing, oxtail
lamb - un-trimmed chops, ground, shank, stewing
poultry - legs and thighs.  Duck and goose
pork - shoulder, belly, leg, home-made sausage
fish - salmon, trout, mackerel, sea trout
offal - bone marrow
eggs - fried or scrambled

good luck and enjoy the WOE....

It's Day 3 and I am ravenously hungry today.

I've eaten everything I brought to work save 1 apple.

I think I need more animal fats but I don't know how to get more into my diet.

Can I add more bacon?  I know it's not the best for me (at least from the grocery store), but there's a local butcher who does pasture raised pork and nitrate free bacon.

You do not appear to be eating enough food period.  Plus, you are way short on animal fat.

I eat when I'm hungry.  Today is the first day I've felt really hungry.....like I have a hollow leg or something!

HOw do I get more animal fats?  Buy fattier cuts of meat?

I'm kinda with Bearso. Roughly how much meat/fish/chicken are you having (how much at lunch and how much at dinner)?

How are you cooking it? Eat fattier cuts, cook in dripping/saved fat...

You might have cut sugar but I see maple syrup and wonder what is in the hot sauce?

What do you mean by research? I'm wondering if your diet is based on Cordain (all the initial lean stuff with oils, dressings and fruits)? What is your goal? Your goal will determine your diet to some extent.

I read "the Paleo Diet" by Cordain.  I know that I should be eating fattier cuts of meat, but am not entirely sure what to buy to be honest.  I'm not trying to eat lean, just eating what I want basically.

I cooked my chicken breasts in a mixture of olive oil, spices, and a bit of balsamic.

Maple syrup is my weakness and I know I'm only supposed to have it sparingly.  I put less than a tablespoon in my salad dressing sometimes.

I thought Hot sauce was allowed?  That can easily be removed.

I'm usually getting about 6-8 ounces of meat per serving and have it with every meal and try to have it with snacks too.

My goal is to lose weight and remove some health concerns (blood pressure creeping up).

Day 4
« Reply #11 on: July 07, 2011, 06:22:30 AM »
Breakfast:
  -2 eggs with hot sauce
  -banana

Snacks:
-small salad with chicken (5 oz)
  -mashed squash with bacon fat
  -grapes

Lunch:
-broccoli salad with bacon, almond slices, cherry tomatoes
-dressing of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic

I'm still getting a craving after lunch for something sweet, although I haven't given in.  I should save my fruit for just after lunch so that I can get that sweetness in.

Dinner:
-stirfry with zucchini, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, olive oil, and beef

Pasture raised uncured bacon is excellent.  And yes, get fattier cuts of meat.  Personally, I find even 80% lean ground beef to be a bit lean, and prefer 70% or 75%.

Also, make sure you get plenty of water.  Half a gallon a day is not too much.

Day 5

Coming into my first Friday on Paleo.  I used to go out for lunch every Friday so it was weird to make one.

Breakfast:
  -2 eggs scrambled
  -blackberries

Snacks:
-chicken & tomato salad with olive oil dressing
  -grapes

Lunch:
-went to Subway with boyfriend and had salad with turkey, bacon, tomatoes and cucumbers with olive oil dressing.  Couldn't finish the whole thing.  Made me feel sick to my stomach for some reason.
-leftover stirfry (broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms, beef, zucchini)

see my first post on this thread!

First, eat fattier kinds of meat (red meat) and fattier cuts of all meat (thighs not breast, fatty ground beef not lean stirfry strips)
Next, cook all veg in *animal fat*.  Tallow is best, then ghee (you can make it from butter), then butter.  Mushrooms are great for soaking up fat!

You're probably in low-carb induction at the moment.  I would recommend keeping some coconut (fresh or dessicated) to snack on - it will give you a quick energy boost when you need it!
