Dee's Food Journal
« on: December 12, 2011, 06:01:01 PM »
Blood sugar:  162
Weight:  282

OK, today is Day One...

I went to have blood work done today and had to fast until 1pm so no breakfast.

LUNCH:  6 pieces bacon and 4 fried eggs (fried in the bacon fat).

Dinner:  Pork ribs with sauerkraut   (It's in the oven now).

I feel tired and a little nauseated - I'm not used to eating grease.  Plus I'm used to 1,064 carbs per day and am now down to a handful.

I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a lot of sleeping just to pass the time...

A friend of mine has a husband who began Paleo 2 weeks ago and has lost 9 pounds!

ETA:  I added garlic instead of onion to the sauerkraut - YUCK.  Ended up eating only about 1/2 cup of it plus part of one rib.  Tossed the rest of it.  Spent the rest of the night wishing cavemen used TUMS.

Thank you very much!  :D

I didn't have Internet for the past 24 hours - the longest 24 hours of my life, LOL.

Yesterday, I had a total of 48 carbs - a big change from 1,064!  And, boy, I can feel it.

I was used to waking up during the night and eating 6 (or more) rice pudding cups (sugar-free, of course!).  Since beginning Paleo, I really feel the loss of that pudding.  (I don't mind that I no longer eat 3 cartons of ice cream daily, though...)  Last night, I even told myself that someone (Mark?) mentioned 80% on Paleo /20% off Paleo as okay... so I thought having the pudding should be okay. Or maybe just 4 pudding cups...

I could see how that kind of thinking can lead to going back to 1,064 carbs.

I used to smoke 4 packs of cigs a day for 32 years - until 11 Jan 2011.  Quitting was not hard at all (thanks to Chantix) - not one craving for a cig.  Amazing.  But I'm torn between crying or throwing something because of the reduction in carbs.

Anyway, food menu for Day 2 (13 Dec):

Breakfast - 2 tablespoons sliced almonds
Lunch - 2 hamburgers, 1 package of Green Giant Steamers (Veggies with olive oil).

Dinner - 1 hamburger, 1 package of Green Giant Steamers

Snack - 1 cup applesauce with 1 tsp of cinnamon

(Breakfast was skimpy because a repairman was coming over and I didn't want to have a big breakfast ready just when he came to the door)

Last night was the worst yet.  Totally miserable and wanting pudding.  Told myself maybe I'll have one day a week in which I can have the pudding - that way, I'll have something to look forward to... then I thought maybe I can have pudding 2x a week - that way, I won't have to wait too long... then I realized if I buy any pudding, I'm screwed because I won't stop at once or twice a week.

At about 11:30pm I couldn't stand it any longer and went looking for food.  I found a jar of green olives and ate about 20 of them before stopping.

Today, I woke up and weighed in:  272 lbs.  I lost 9 pounds in 3 days!  Sure it's water but it's water that's no longer inside of me!

BREAKFAST:  6 p. bacon & 4 eggs fried in bacon grease (wanted to use up the rest of the bacon).

LUNCH:  None - doc app't today

DINNER:  3 chicken legs with brushed melted butter rolled in Italian seasoning, paprika and Parmesan cheese.  I baked them on a rack so they wouldn't cook in their own juice/grease.

DESSERT:  1 med. banana

I know I'll get up in the middle of the night and have some Green olives again - they helped last night.

No kidding.  This is one of the reasons why 80/20 doesn't work so well on paleo.  It's best to be strict for the first month or so at least.

Good job for resisting, though.  Sounds like you're doing well so far - keep it up!

Thank you, Warren!

I think the 9lb weight loss will help me with the pudding issue.  *Fingers crossed*

Day 4
Weight:  269

Yes, I've lost 11 lbs in 4 days - all while eating a lot of fat.  I still have to get my mind wrapped around that one.

Best of all, the carb cravings are GONE!  I went to the store today and walked right past the rice pudding.

BREAKFAST:

1/4 c. almonds & 1/4 c. macadamia nuts with 1 banana - all put in a grinder.  Delicious!

LUNCH:

Part of a store-bought cooked chicken
15 green olives

DINNER:

Other 3 chicken legs from last night
Cut up cucumbers, green onion, 1 tomato with 2 tsp. olive oil and 5 tsp. red wine vinegar

I'm sure I'll have another 10-15 green olives tonight as well.

My neighbor just came to the door with a plate containing about twelve 1" squares of Creme de Menthe bars.  I'm glad it was today and not last Tues or Wed...  I'm not tempted at all.  (I'll pass them along to a friend).

DAY 5:

BREAKFAST:
4 eggs fried in 2 tablespoons butter
6 beef sausages

I upped my water intake yesterday to 3 bottles; I've had 4 so far today.

Day 8 (Monday):

6 beef sausages

Hmmm... I haven't lost weight since Friday.  I know I'm getting greedy but still...

Looking back, I've been drinking Diet Pepsi (about 6 cans each on Friday, Sat & Sun).  Today, I stayed with water until about 4pm and my goal is 3 or 4 Diet Pepsi and then less tomorrow.

Also, I know I have to eat 3 meals per day!  The problem is my sleep disorder - sometimes I don't get up at about 10:30am and am not hungry for a few hours.  So I eat "breakfast" at about 1:30 and then am not hungry again until about 6pm.  (Probably because of the water).  Dinner is at about 7pm and then I'm in bed by 9:30.

ETA:  Thank you, Samjohn, for correcting me about needing 3 meals per day!

Also, I know I have to eat 3 meals per day!

Not necessary, eat when you're hungry.

I only eat once a day, a huge dinner.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

As I think you've mentioned, much of the initial weight loss is water weight.  After a week or two, the weight loss goes more slowly, and on a day to day basis may be difficult to discern.  For women, there's also a monthly cycle that can obscure the trend.

For women, the best approach is probably to compare each weighing to a month before.  Men can get away with comparing to a week before.

Hi Warren,

Thank you for your comments.  I know you're right about the water weight.  I guess I wish I had a little more water in me - like about 80 lbs.  That would be a VERY nice chunk of weight!  Oh well.

I don't have to worry about monthly cycles so I guess that's good.

I have a question, though... I can continue eating the same foods and quantities, correct?  Even though I'm eating Paleo, I guess the "low fat" mindset is still there.

Thank you.
