Food diary of Claves (Paleo newbie)
« on: January 17, 2012, 05:59:01 AM »
Hi all,

New to the forum and fairly new to Paleo!  I'd really appreciate any feedback at anytime, on whether I'm eating too much/too little/too often, or if I'm eating the wrong kinds of foods etc. :)

I was wondering if it's still possible to eat a moderate-high amount of fruit (about 2-3 pieces a day; the most amazing fruit is in season now so it's hard to resist!  I'd likely eat less fruit in winter) and still lose weight, or is that amount likely to halt weight loss entirely (or make me gain)?  I'm happy to lose weight slowly as I find it is easier for to keep the weight off long-term.

Today's food diary: 17 January 2012

Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs, 1 large white peach, black chai tea

Lunch: a salad of rocket and cos lettuce (two big handfuls), shredded carrot, walnuts (about 8 halves), half an avocado, and half a mango.  Drizzled with about 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil and the juice of half a lemon.  One boiled egg, and a peppermint tea.

Snack: I was RAVENOUS about 2 hours after my lunch and felt foggy (not enough animal protein I guess?) so I had half a teaspoon of organic ghee then ate half a large tin of red salmon (I ate the bones and skin).  Unbelievably, I felt hungry 20 mins after this, so I had two large slices of liverwurst.  That filled me right up!

Dinner:  a roast chicken leg and thigh with skin, a piece of roast carrot, roast pumpkin with cinnamon, roast red sweet potato (small piece, golf-ball size), 1/4 roasted apple (I stuffed the chicken with a whole green apple) - all vegies roasted with a little bit of unhydrogenated lard on top of each.  A cup of steamed cabbage with a teaspoon organic salted butter.

After dinner (my boyfriend wanted to go out for sorbet): unsweetened black coffee.  I know it's not Paleo but I figured it was a better choice than sorbet.

Water consumption is also approx 2L every day.  I've always been a big water drinker.

I thought I'd be too full for dinner, but between the liverwurst snack and dinner I went for a 50-minute walk at moderate pace which included a couple of steep hills.  I guess that contributed to me feeling like a substantial meal when I got home?

I hope I'm on the right track diet-wise, and not overdoing the calories or wrong types of foods!

18 January 2012 - Day 2!

Breakfast: 1 fresh apricot, 3 Brazil nuts, 2 boiled eggs, spiced white tea

Snack: a slice of liverwurst (approx 50g)

Lunch: 2/3 of a leftover roast chicken breast with skin, a whole small red oak lettuce, leftover roasting juices/fat from the chicken, squeezed over with half a lemon.  Peppermint tea

(I had a wing and leftover roasted vegies which I planned on eating too, but I couldn't touch them... I really felt full and I had a bit of indigestion for about 2 hours after lunch :(  )

Snack (indigestion went away and then I had an energy slump at work): big piece of mango (cheek + middle/seed of a large one), and 1 tsp almond butter.  Spiced green tea

Exercise: 30 min Sweat + Shape Nike Training (iPhone App)
Straight after exercise (really needed to eat something quickly!  I think I worked out too hard for someone in early Paleo... will stick to walks and yoga for a little while, I think): 1 fresh apricot

Dinner: grass-fed rib fillet steak, garlic, mushrooms and onion all fried in lard.  Sauce made with the pan juices deglazed with lemon juice.  Large portion lightly steamed cabbage, and a simple salad I made of a sliced raw zucchini marinated in raw apple cider vinegar, with pepper and Celtic sea salt.

"Dessert": a pot of aniseed tea :)

Throughout the day:
- about 2L filtered water in addition to my other drinks
(sometimes I wonder whether I drink too much and it interferes with my digestion?  I feel really thirsty through the day if I don't drink plenty of fluids though)

Looks good - eat enough protein & especially fat at a meal.

Coffee - lots of us drink it (it might be 'modern' but it's awesome)

Don't sweat the fruit - it may slow weight loss, but really everyone is in such a hurry now.

Don't count calories, let your body settle into this way of eating and learn how to tell you when you are hungry,
Ideology that fits biology

Great, thanks very much for the feedback avelin :)
I'd rather do it slowly as you suggested, and I love fruit so I'll keep including it.

Day 3 - 19 January 2011

Breakfast: 1 tin sardines in olive oil, 2 boiled eggs, a large raw carrot, green tea with lemon myrtle, handful of red grapes.

Lunch: chicken wing and small piece of breast (leftover roast) with skin, 1/3 roast carrot, large slice of roast pumpkin with cinnamon, small portion of leftover steamed cabbage and raw zucchini marinated in salt and raw apple cider vinegar.  1 boiled egg.

Snack: 1 lady finger banana chopped, with 3 chopped Brazil nuts and a big handful of blueberries, with 100mL coconut milk poured over

Snack (I was hungry again just before I went for a walk): 1 lady finger banana

Exercise: 50 minute walk at moderate pace

Dinner: Went to Hog's Breath hahah... had a regular prime rib topped with avocado and bearnaise sauce, and steamed carrots and broccoli, and a side bowl of sauteed garlic mushrooms (I ditched the corn and the potatoes that came with it; luckily I was already full from the steak and other veg!).  Soda water with lime to drink.

"Dessert": Earl Grey tea

Plus about 1.8L of water throughout the day

Day 4 - 20 January 2012  (posting early as I doubt I'll be able to do it later)

Breakfast: 2 x boiled eggs, 1 fresh apricot, water

Snack #1: (so hungry) Slice of liverwurst

Snack #2: black iced tea with coconut cream, 1 lady finger banana spread with 1 tablespoon almond butter (definitely not enough at breakfast; was really hungry again)

Lunch: 3 Brazil nuts, 175g smoked salmon wrapped about slices of avocado (1/2 an avocado), 1 large raw carrot, green tea with lemon myrtle

Dinner: Haven't had dinner yet, going out for dinner - will stick to meat and vegetables.  Am craving fresh green vegies after such a rich lunch.

** I was really unprepared today, so I'm finding it difficult.  I didn't have any leftover meats or vegetables to bring to work, so I was stuck with whatever was in the work fridge and pantry.  Lesson learned!

Looks pretty good.  2 eggs and fruit is only about 200kcal, so not surprising you find yourself hungry on those days.

Thanks Warren Dew, I'll definitely start eating a bit more for breakfast regularly; I think it helps with my 3pm 'slump' :)

Weekend has come and gone... ate quite a few non-Paleo things  :-[  but tried to keep the amounts to a minimum.  I noticed that my stomach is flatter and not bloated (which equals pain and burning) all this week, which is great!  I ate a little bit of sweet corn, rice, and milk and they all seemed to be fine gut-wise.  I won't be making it a regular habit, though.  I'll be stricter through the week too.

Day 4's dinner ended up being at an Asian restaurant; I had steamed chicken with chilli, steamed Asian greens and crispy skin duck.
However, I followed it with a full-cream milk flat white coffee for "dessert" while my boyfriend went for his gelato fix (he's dropped his sugar intake dramatically but this is one thing he doesn't want to give up).

Day 5 - 21 January 2012 (certainly not the greatest day - long travelling day and being ill-prepared, running late.  Ate a lot of fruit in the end)

Breakfast: 1 banana, large handful of almonds, a few slices of salami, water

Snack: Didn't have much of an option except fruit - I had mango, watermelon, grapes and strawberries... and plenty of them.

Late lunch: plain green salad with shredded carrot and tomato, quarter of a small barbequed chicken (thigh/leg portion)

Snack upon getting home: 1 banana and a handful of blueberries with a large dollop of heavy cream

Dinner: Korean BBQ-your-own restaurant - a Wagyu rib fillet steak that I BBQ'd to rare, and barbequed vegetables (pumpkin, onion, capsicum and a few fresh green beans).  I did eat one rice ball too, which was a small amount of rice (I'd say a tablespoon) with sesame seeds, seaweed, mayonnaise, kimchi and pickled radish formed into a ball.  And also some salad (mixed lettuces, tomato and kimchi)

Dessert: long black coffee

Days 4 & 5: No real exercise as such, other than lengthy weekend romance activities haha

___________________________________________________

Day 6 - 22 Jan 2012

Upon rising: 1 lady finger banana with a small dollop of heavy cream

Brunch (at a cafe): large salad of Italian canned tuna in oil, dark green lettuces, tomato, cucumber, capers, olives, and red onion.  Long black coffee with cream.

Lunch: grilled cod with lemon, and 250g fresh prawns.  Diet Coke.

Exercise: A leisurely 2 hour walk across sand (marine national park when the tide was out - really enjoyed this)

We had dinner at my boyfriend's mother's place, so I ate what she was cooking.  A thick slice of roast pork with fat and crackling (yum), a small roast potato, a roast carrot, small half-cob of sweetcorn, roast pumpkin, and some steamed broccoli.

(Yesterday) Day 7 - 23 January 2012

Breakfast: 3 boiled eggs, 1 medium mandarin, 3 Brazil nuts, tea made with one chai teabag and 2 tbl coconut cream

Lunch: large tin (the 415g ones) of red salmon with skin and bones, with 2 tablespoons organic butter melted over the top, and 1/3 of a medium avocado

Snack: cup of black tea with 1 tbl coconut cream

Dinner: made a large pot of chicken soup - organic free-range wings, thighs and legs, carrots, celery, onions, garlic, pumpkin, water, Celtic sea salt, black pepper.  For dinner I wasn't that hungry (lunch really filled me up!) so I had one bowl of soup with one thigh with skin.

Dessert: felt a bit peckish and wanted something sweet, so had half a cup of cooked raspberries with a dollop of double cream

Day 8 - 24 Jan 2012

I've lost 0.8kg this week, eating duck skin and pork crackling and delicious rib fillet steaks! :D  I'm feeling a bit trimmer; I think some of the excess water weight has gone.  And my stomach and digestion are feeling good.  I've been tracking my calories on Myfitnesspal at the end of each day, and I'm averaging 1700-2100 a day (I tend to eat slightly more on the days I exercise but I normally stay around the 1700-1900, I found).  Does that seem OK or excessive, I wonder?  I'm doing OK for now and haven't had any cravings, so I'll stick with what I'm doing.  I can always reduce fruit or cut out cheats like occasional milk in coffee if I find myself stalling or feeling less than great in a few weeks.

Breakfast: bowl of leftover chicken and vegetable soup, with one chicken thigh and one chicken leg (with skin).  Black tea with a two tablespoons of coconut cream.

Lunch: bowl of leftover chicken and vegetable soup, with one chicken leg and one chicken wing, with skin.  Two boiled eggs.

Snack: three Brazil nuts.  One chopped medium banana and a handful of blueberries, in a bowl with one heaped tablespoon of coconut cream and half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder.  Green tea with lemon myrtle.

Dinner: 200g grass-fed rib fillet steak, cooked in unhydrogenated lard and served rare.  Mushroom cream sauce (mushrooms and onion sauteed in remaining pan juices, deglazed with lime juice and a tablespoon of double (51% fat) cream.  4 large florets of cauliflower and 4 medium florets of broccoli, steamed, topped with a bit of lime juice and butter.

Dessert: small coffee with full-fat unhomogenised milk.

Water: 2L

No exercise today :(  I'd love to go for a walk, but here's a storm here atm (pelting rain) and it isn't due to stop until Sunday, they say.

Day 9 - 25 Jan 2012

Breakfast: large raw carrot, 3 Brazil nuts, 4 chicken livers sauteed with 1/4 of an onion + their juices.  Green chai tea.

Lunch: Approx 120g roasted pork belly (meat and skin), large slice of watermelon

Snack: Black coffee with coconut cream

Haven't had dinner yet... I'll be dining out tonight.  I'm planning on it being salad or vegetable based, with some meat (likely Italian - I'll get meatballs and a large green salad, or a large grilled calamari salad).  I am craving crunchy greens! :)

You're going great, Claves! I agree you probably need a bigger breakfast with more meat and fat to avoid getting hungry later. It sounds like you're sorting things out nicely. Don't worry about the calories - if you're eating according to your appetite and your weight is heading in the direction you want it to, it's all good.

Thanks for the advice Jean; I'm realising I need to be much more prepared for breakfast time too.  I've been trying to cook extra food for dinner to eat as leftovers for breakfast the next day... the difficult part of that is having a big ex-swimmer partner with a huge appetite (and a pretty shocking diet, admittedly :/); I have to fight him for any leftovers  :police:!  If they're there, he'll convince himself he's hungry and will eat them.  I might have to cook more of the things that he doesn't like... offal and duck.

OK Confession  :-[ I had a bit of a blowout yesterday (Australia Day public holiday - had to dine out all day), but I'm feeling pretty awful this morning so I'm taking that as a sign to eat cleanly from now on!  And I didn't even particularly enjoy it, either.

---------

Yesterday: Day 10 - 26 Jan 2012

Slept in very late (until 12:30pm - I'm not sure if I'm getting sick but I honestly could not get up at 6, 9, 11am... and my boyfriend couldn't either) and had breakfast of a scotch fillet steak with a rocket salad with avocado, feta cheese, red onion, marinated red capsicum, balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

On a drive through the afternoon - large handful of cashews and water

Dinner - Chinese food (am assuming there was peanut oil, cornflour, sugar and soy at minimum :().  I had combination seafood and vegetables, fillet steak and vegetables, and crispy skin lemon chicken.

Of course I was still hungry even after a large plate, so after dinner I had two white nectarines and a small bowl of cooked blackberries with double cream.  AND THEN... a Peppermint Choc Magnum ice cream.  Ugh... I noticed that my stomach bloated after this and I had reflux.  Avoiding from now on!

Today will be Day 11:

Breakfast: chai tea with coconut cream, three eggs scrambled in butter, a pear

Snack will be Brazil nuts and nectarine, if I'm hungry.

*edited lunch*: 1 lamb shank cooked in its own juices and carrot, and a large salad of cos lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avocado, watermelon and red capsicum.  Plus a nectarine.

For dinner, I'm roasting a whole chicken with lard and making roast beetroot, roast carrots, roast pumpkin (and roast potatoes for BF), steamed broccoli and steamed cabbage with butter.  I usually eat one leg and thigh with skin, plus extra breast with skin if I'm hungry.

Heading out to a gig tonight, no alcohol on the menu! :)  Since I started having stomach problems I haven't been drinking, so that's easy to avoid.  I'll stick to soda water with lemon/lime.

Lots of sugar in the lime cordial, which most places use unless you specify fresh lemon/lime pieces.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.
