Food habits of the elusive angela
« on: October 07, 2009, 08:52:06 PM »
So to kick this off, I've been trying to eat at least two Paleo meals a day for a week now, with a complete free-for-all on Friday night and Saturday night (it was a birthday).

I've mainly subsisted on the following over the last week:

Good:
-Beef and chicken stew with carrots, celery and onions (tasty)
-Steak
-home-made beef jerky, mostly salt and pepper...
-stopped drinking beer, switched to dry cider.
-have eaten raw nuts and dried raisins, dates and apricots as snacks.
-cut sugar out of my coffee!! it was easier than I expected...
-cut back on coffee
-no more pop.

Less good:
-some of the jerky was marinated in either BBQ sauce (we have a ton left over from grilling this summer) or teriyaki. The teriyaki is gone now.
-pork ribs this weekend, marinated in BBQ sauce. Read the ingredients--blech.
-Still eating a bite or two of cheese every day.

I am buying grocery store meat, and it says right on it, grain fed. I've found farms in the area (but a good hour at least away) that produce pastured meat. I'll be calling them this week to figure out how much more it'd cost to get pastured chicken, beef, bison, and possibly VENISON! (I love venison :)

Ugh, what a week! It started with Thanksgiving dinner at family friends of my boyfriend... I had a small helping of everything to be polite. Ever since then I've been craving sugar and bread. Also, I'm stressed because I start a new job tomorrow. There have been numerous cheats every day, although I have tried to redirect it to fruit instead of desserts.

14/10/09
Breakfast:
6 slices bacon
Lunch (out at coffee shop with friend):
Chicken parmesan wrap :(

Dinner:
Paleo beef/carrot/celery stew :)

Dessert:
Mixed drink :( :(

Tomorrow I have to pack lunch for the first time in AGES... I guess I'll take the last of the stew, and my raw nut mix for snacks. If they want to go out for lunch I guess I'll see what Paleo-ish options the cafeteria has (working on a University campus).

Notes on the last week: Felt much less bloated overall, even with the cheats. Have been best about avoiding grains. Still having occasional heartburn.

"6 slices of bacon" isn't much of a b-fast?

You might want to learn the "going out to lunch/eat" deferment. Repeat as follows "Oh man,  ::) I am intolerant everything  :-\. It's such a drag. Lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, lectin intolerant, you have no idea.  :( Eating out is just not worth it. MAN, YOU DON"T EVEN WANT TO BE AROUND AFTERWARDS  :o. My stomach, nevermind. Thanks anyway, I'd better pass  :-\"

So yes, I'm still around. I have been in lurk mode which is normal for me ;)  Things have also been a little haywire with starting a new job and getting back into the swing of both of us working all day. My BF is making an effort to join me in Paleo eating, which is nice--as long as I serve a side of veggies with the meat, he's happy, although he still eats/drinks a lot of non-Paleo f00d.

I've had some small successes over the last few weeks:
a) I've really shown myself that wheat/gluten/grain-containing foods DO NOT agree with me. Digestive upset and heartburn are sure to follow anything with those ingredients.
b) I tried dark chocolate (75%) as a treat and was rewarded with intestinal cramps and digestive upset. Not sure if it was that particular brand or not. I do not crave chocolate like some people, so I might just cut it out instead of trying different brands/kinds.
c) I cut cream out of my coffee cold-turkey today and enjoyed my coffee! I can now honestly say "I like my coffee black just like my metal"! :P I've been thinking about doing this for a while because this is the LAST bit of dairy in my diet.

The no-dairy thing is huge, for me. If asked 6 months ago if I could cut dairy, I would have said, "Over my dead body!". I loved cheese. I couldn't imagine coffee without cream. Butter is delicious. (I quit drinking milk a few years ago, it just started testing gross.) But after only a few weeks without cheese, it kind of turns my stomach, and I noticed cream in coffee was starting to leave a weird aftertaste in my mouth. Butter is still delicious, but I don't have any reason to use it without bread and potatoes.

I bought a crockpot a week ago, and I'm sooo happy with it! Tonight I'll make soup in it, with a leftover chicken carcass and some miscellaneous beef bits and some celery and carrots.

I have more to write, but this is getting a bit long... and isn't really a food log. :S

... and I'm back. Well, I hadn't really left, just went into lurk mode. I've fallen off the wagon a few times over the summer, and it culminated in the utterly DISASTROUS last weekend (so bad, I shall never speak of it again). Today I realized that I need to give myself a kick in the rear and DO THIS. NO EXCUSES. By New Years', I want to be lean and fit. I've made a few goals, some of which I'd really appreciate feedback on:

1. By New Years' 2011, I will have visible abs. This will likely entail losing 4 inches around my waist. I have 1.5 months. Is this doable?
2. I will eat 100% Paleo for 30 days straight. No grains, dairy, legumes, sugar, or alcohol at all.

I would love to work on strength and conditioning, but right now I have plantar fasciitis in my right foot and the beginnings of it in my left foot, so I'm taking time off CrossFit to heal up. I don't know how long this will take, so no strength goals right now. All I can do is work on pushups/pullups/situps at home :)

Food Log for today (includes some non-Paleo items which I am trying to eat up):
  • 8AM: 2 slices of salami (gluten free)
  • 9:30AM: 16 oz organic coffee with 3T whipping cream, 5 slices salami, 2C almond milk (unsweetened) with 3 scoops whey protein powder (33g protein total)
  • noon: 4 oz basa fish filet, cooked in 1t butter
  • 1PM: double shot espresso with 2T half-n-half, "Elevate Me" fruit & whey protein bar (link here:http://www.prosnack.com/nutrition-info#allfruit )
  • 6PM: 3 slices salami
  • 8PM 5 slices salami, 1C hot cocoa (made with milk and sugar... definitely not Paleo)
  • 10PM: 3 oz beef tenderloin roast, 1C acorn squash with 2T butter, 1C broccoli
  • Supplements: 3 fish oil pills, 8000mg VitD, 99mg potassium, 1T cod liver oil (for Vit A), 400mg magnesium citrate (Natural Calm)

I just added the cod liver oil and Mg Citrate a week ago after reading Robb Wolf's book, The Paleo Solution. The MG definitely helps sleep quality; I sleep deeply, dream, wake up feeling like I rested, and don't get up during the night for bathroom trips. I've been having vision problems, so I added the CLO for some VitA; not sure if I'll keep that up in the long term as there seems to be some controversy over it. Will continue to research this.

My BF is still half-on-board with Paleo--more than anything, he just hates feeling restricted in his dietary choices. Meh, he is supportive of my efforts, and will eat what I cook, so that's all good for now.

4 inches in 1.5 months?  To be honest, I don't think that's doable in a healthy way.  Maybe you should target new years 2012 instead; that ought to be doable if you stay on the wagon.

:( Bleh... That's what I was afraid of. I'm having trouble setting "realistic" goals here because I'm not sure what % of body fat I currently have. I am 5'7" and currently 133lbs. I have been as low as 114lbs as an adult, but not in a good way. Also, I've been Crossfitting since January and have put on some muscle, so I don't know where my "perfect weight" would be. I really just want to lean out. :(

You will know when you reach your perfect weight because you will steady out at that weight.  Heavy exercise will add weight by adding muscle.  Don't really concentrate on weight, body fat or MBI.  Concentrate on reaching the body composition you want.  I still need to lose some fat around the middle and add muscle to my upper body but I am at a fairly low body weight.  I guess now I am skinny fat.
No expectations, no disappointments!

If you want to measure progress and a weekly look in the mirror won't do, you can always buy 5buck calipers and measure body fat.
Any idiot can get on a treadmill and watch TV and then take great pride in the fact they've exercised.

No offense but goals that aim for 1.5 months to see huge results, sound like fad diet goals.

Also it will absolutely never happen with you using dairy, sugar and processed protein supplements.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Well, I've been Paleo for over a year now, just had a rough patch this fall and am trying to get back on the wagon by setting some solid goals for motivation.

I hear you on the dairy/protein powders, but I can't throw them out. Like many people, I'm on a budget :S

Yeah, I would love to be rid of it the excess fat around the middle, butt and thighs. Definitely a body comp issue... I rarely get on the scale as it varies too much day-to-day to be useful. :)

Good idea, I'll pick up some cheap calipers. Do you pinch horizontally or vertically, or does it not matter as long as you're consistent?

I bought the $5 calipers and if you look at my progress picture in the last page of the sticky post of progress section, that's about 14% Bodyfat as per the $5 calipers.

Will say on the manual. Go on youtube and check some vids to learn how to use them. And know that you won't be able to measure less than 1% variations.
