Food journal- Anderbrock
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:21:34 PM »
I happened upon the paleo WOE last week and decided it was worth a try. I have been trying to lose weight for quite some time, and have had success during a "diet," but when the diet ends, the weight comes back.
I officially started the paleo diet on Saturday September, 10.  I am going to keep a food log so I can keep accountable and so that more experienced members can shoot me pointers if they see a problem.

09/11/2011
Breakfast:
2 chicken apple sausage
3 eggs w/olive oil

Mid-morning:
small apple

Lunch:
1 beef patty w/horseradish
2 cups broccoli
1 carrot
1 cup grapes

Dinner:
3 Beef kabobs (homemade, consists of beef, mushroom, onion, cherry tomato, and fresh pineapple)
Bacon (estimate 5-7 pieces, did not count)
1 cup grapes

09/12/2011
Breakfast:
Pumpkin spice latte (too many carbs, I know)

Lunch:
2 Beef kabobs (homemade, consisting of beef, mushroom, onion, cherry tomato, and fresh pineapple)
horseradish
15 strawberries
1 red pepper

Dinner:
2 beef patties
2 eggs w/olive oil

I also track my activity and food on fitbit.com. The breakdowns for the last few days are as follows:

9/10/2011 Daily Calorie Composition: 44% from carbs, 27% from fat and 29% from protein.
9/11/2011 Daily Calorie Composition: 23% from carbs, 55% from fat and 22% from protein.
9/12/2011 Daily Calorie Composition: 20% from carbs, 54% from fat and 26% from protein. I will still have a bowl of strawberries before bed, so this is not complete.

The macronutrient breakdown of the latter two days is looking pretty good.  Did you notice a difference in how you felt with that versus your first day?

Be on the lookout for hidden sugar and gluten in things like the sausages.  The milk and sweeteners in the latte aren't paleo, which you probably knew.  It looks like a pretty good start overall.

If you're trying to lose weight, you might want to cut back on the fruit to one or two servings a day, and increase the meat and/or veggies.  Some people can eat fruit and have no problems losing weight, but many find that the sugar in fruit can slow down or stall weight loss.

I did definitely notice a difference in how I felt the past two days. I usually am so tired by the time I get off work that I want to come home and take a nap. Both days, I felt like I definitely had more energy!

Today was a hard eating day. Everything was on the go. I am a nursing student, so I am super busy and sometimes the decision comes down to cooking a meal or finishing homework...

9/13/2011 Daily Calorie Composition: 26% from carbs, 47% from fat and 27% from protein.
Breakfast
Jimmy Dean Breakfast bowl (egg, bacon, cheese, potato)

Lunch
Panda express 2 entree + 1 side
side: Steamed veggies, entrees: kubari beef and kung pao chicken. No noodles or breading in this meal, although I'm sure the sauces are terrible!!!

Dinner:
Grocery store salad with turkey, ham, one hard boiled egg, and cheddar cheese (There must have been over a cup, the majority which I scraped off).

On a side note, I am definitely feeling more sluggish after today's meals, I even ended up taking a nap. Noted some digestive issues a few hours after lunch.

Paleo with a busy schedule is more difficult, but doable if you can plan ahead.

A few hints:
- Boil eggs a dozen at a time, keep them in the fridge, and take them for snacks or as an addition to lunch.

- You can scramble eggs in under four minutes if you put some fat in the pan, turn the heat on high, then add the eggs and stir like mad (thanks to Samjohn for that hint).

- Invest in a slow cooker if you don't have one already.  On weekends (or whenever you have a day off) cook a large roast or chicken.  Cut it up or shred it, freeze anything you can't eat in the next few days, and you'll have some easy meals ready to go when you don't have time to cook.

- Roast chicken is easy to make, and for one person will give leftovers.

- During the school year, my husband and I always keep canned tuna or salmon on hand in case we're both home late and too tired to cook.

- Dinner doesn't have to be a long production.  I use the food matrix if I'm out of ideas on what to make.  Anything with a star by it on the list is a food that should probably be avoided if you're trying to lose weight.

If you scroll down to the third page it has cooking directions which will typically get the food ready in under 30 minutes, so long as you're not using huge cuts of meat.
