Freznow's Food Journal

Alrighty, time to see if you all can't help keep me accountable for what I eat. So far I seem to go through short phases of eating pristinely paleo and eating only about 50/50 paleo with occasional days that just fall to pieces, so my goal right now is to increase the frequency of the more ideal paleo days and decrease the number of days that don't make the cut at all. It gets easier the more I realize that all pasta does is give me gas, and all sugar does is upset my stomach and mess up my sinuses. Funny how you never notice those things before.
Nov. 10, 2010
Breakfast was:
2 eggs
3 brussel sprouts
Bit of broccoli
Coconut oil
Couple leaves of green leaf lettuce
A cup of homemade pumpkin soup (pumpkin, chicken broth, cream, spices)
Lunch was a protein shake (15g whey isolate, a banana, a cup of homemade kefir, spoon of cocoa powder). I try not to have protein shakes often but it was either this or eating pizza with friends. I take a carefully selected multivitamin on such an occasion, just to balance things out. I also had my daily 5000IU of vitamin D at this time. [My levels were at 30 when I was tested a month ago, hence the dose.]
Snack was half a large carrot and an ounce of almonds.
Dinner was about 4-5oz of salmon marinated in mustard and olive oil, some more brussel sprouts and broccoli saute'ed in olive oil, and lettuce. Afterwards I felt full but still hungry, which I think means I'm not getting enough fat. Any tips on that? I mean, I doused those veggies in oil. Should I dip 'em in oil too? Actually, I should probably go back to that protein shake I had earlier and add more fat, that synthetic concoction is low... [Please don't suggest more coconut oil, I can't take it when it isn't covered by the taste of eggs or curry.]
Then I gave in to the ice cream while we watched Conan tonight. :x In my defence, it was a gift of homemade ice cream, but that doesn't make it much better. This won't be making a reappearance, I promise.

Not too bad a start. It's good that you know you need to fix the protein shake and ice cream.
With respect to the dinner, it might help if you used animal fat instead of olive oil, as the more saturated fat might help you feel more full. If you can't get unhydrogenated lard or tallow, clarified butter is a fairly mild cheat. Or, it might help just to have a bigger dinner.

Avocados and nuts add up the fat calories. Can toss an avocado right into your protein drink to add some fat. I've also been know the toss raw eggs into my protein.

Thanks for the tips.
Right now, I consider dairy a cheat insomuch as it is a convenience food that I seem to have no problem with that just makes my existence easier. None in my family seem to be lactose intolerant, and I haven't noticed much of a difference between the times I don't have kefir or whey and those that I do. I imagine a dairy experiment is in order in the future, but I'll work up to that.
The ice cream just has no excuse.
11/12/2010
Breakfast was 2 eggs, 4 brussel sprouts, and 3oz of leftover salmon in coconut oil.
I was hungry a couple hours later (like 9:30), so I had half a banana and the rest of yesterday's large carrot (those were giant carrots).
Then I decided to fry up an egg in butter (have no source of lard or tallow)
Lunch/dinner was coconut shrimp curry. I had a cup of coffee with cream but no sugar as I tried to let go of my hectic day by the pond.
I also probably had a half ounce of almonds over the course of the day, half cup of kefir, and half a peach.
Better than yesterday

Breakfast:
2 eggs, stalk of broccoli, butter, with a bit of mustard
Then I couldn't resist a few pieces of cereal :[ I had a banana later. I don't want to encourage a carb addiction, but I felt full and better after the banana. I don't have any reason to avoid fruit so I think I'm probably going to start having a bit fruit with breakfast until I get more used to using fat as my main energy source, I guess.
Lunch: leftover shrimp curry
Snack: I had 4 cups of green tea, a cup of coffee, all without sugar, a bit of pumpkin, and a handful of almonds between lunch and dinner. Crazy amount of caffiene, but, gosh, I was thirsty and it's too cold for water. I make my green tea lukewarm so it isn't bitter.
Dinner: Pork barbeque (with a sauce that I know had sugar in it but I ate it anyways), cole slaw, collard greens

Today I barely tried. Overall, not bad, but it's nicer when I can cook dinner myself.
After I had to drop my sister off at school, I had half a cup of coffee with a smidge of milk.
Breakfast was 2 eggs fried in butter and 2 outer leaves of a head of romaine.
Lunch was a cup of homemade chicken soup. Mmmm from the organic chicken we had on Saturday - the stock was so gelatinous when I made it!
Later I had a kefir, chia seed, & mixed berry smoothie with a few leaves of cress. Probably should have thrown more cress in but the kefir was overly cultured so my smoothie was reminiscent of cheese, I didn't want to risk any different flavor.
Dinner was more chicken soup, some roasted pumpkin with butter, a leaf of romaine, and (don't hurt me) some potatoes and green beans.

Man, I find it CRAZY how much fruit and veg I'm eating without even trying. Today was somewhat of a leftover day, so I didn't focus on veg as much as "eat those eggs, and have that soup" and throwing in some cheats because I wasn't going to cook and make more leftovers. Still, I managed to get spinach, pumpkin, onions, carrots, apple... I mean really, it's much easier to incidentally eat veggies on this paleo diet than it was while I was a vegetarian.
11/17/2010
Breakfast: a large helping of frozen spinach cooked in coconut oil and then scrambled with 2 eggs. I ended up having another boiled egg with mustard.
Lunch: leftover liver and onions
Dinner: cup of chicken soup, an apple, a pork chop
Snacks throughout the day: coffee + milk, a bit of cheese, almond butter/coconut oil/cocoa powder, and a sliver of paleo pumpkin cheesecake sort of thing.

Alrighty, yesterday, I cheated, with the big W, and then some.
My sister brought home treats her friends brought to Nippon club because it was her last day. I had a cupcake and two of these Asian rice treats - if you've never had an asian sweet, you don't know how UNsweet they are. It's really just like rice flour and water. Surprisingly or not, I didn't have digestive issues with the rice treat, but I did with the cupcake. (I had them separately.) Well, that's enough of that! No more wheat for me, thank you.
Today
11/19/2010
Woke up groggy (in case of future insomnia, note that wheat and/or sugar caused me to be unable to fall asleep), had a coffee, half cup of milk, then went to run errands.
Lunch was a cup of Fage 2% Greek yogurt and a box of raspberries I got from Safeway and ate out by the pond.
Got home and had some smoked salmon and a spoonful of almond butter.
Later, an apple.
Dinner was 2 eggs, 5 Brussels sprouts, 1.5tbsp butter, thyme, some salt, a few leafs of romaine and dressing.
Obviously I should have made more because I ended up then snacking on two chicken nuggets from my family's takeout and then another spoonful of almond butter. I really need a better insta-fat snack than almond butter. And to eat more. This is just too much.

You need to eat more. What you call dinner is barely any food at all.
That`s why you keep "supplementing" with almond butter. Cook more. If there's leftovers, put in the fridge and revisit a day or two later, or when you need a snack.

To do list:
Stop being such a girl
I don't experience actual hunger very often - only when I haven't eaten for like >12 hours and have recently woken up. Most other times it's just ... the absence of feeling full. Then on Friday nights when everyone else is eating pizza and wings, I sit there and wonder if I'm hungry, and either choose to eat more or not, based on whether I feel close to full or not... Or based on how many calories I've estimated I've had that day. But, of course, that doesn't work, because some days I'm fine at 1200 and others at 2200. I thought "eating to hunger" was supposed to be simple...
Maybe I'm making food too abundant for myself? Maybe I should try some IF and extra-large meals?

So I made breakfast today with an eye towards leftovers.
So I made up 4 scrambled eggs, about 2.5oz sausage, and the last 6 brussels sprouts, plus butter and a clove of garlic.
I ate about 3/4 of it! I'm proud
Won't be checking back in for a while, though. I have a convention this weekend. The hotel I'll be staying at has a big breakfast buffet so I'll be able to get a decent enough breakfast. I'm bringing tinned fish (everyone will love me
) and some almonds as backup. I'll probably be able to snag something at the food court but large breakfasts and what I'm bringing should sustain me well for two and a half days in case I can't find anything.
