Help I am getting fatter!
« on: November 10, 2011, 11:55:30 AM »
I don't get it, I seem to be gaining weight, thicker around the middle???
An example of what I eat:

2-3 hard boiled eggs chopped with celery, a TBS Lemonaise
1 apple sliced  (or 2 eggs cooked in butter with a sliced apple)

some leftover, chicken or pork roast or a hamburger with a salad of just romaine and cucumber, a tsp of lemonaise, watered down.

Snack is a handful of walnuts, a few strawberrys or a banana.  Sometimes a smoothie with berrys, banana and coconut milk and ice.

Dinner often the same as lunch but added veggies, carrots, mushrooms, bok-choy, all cooked in olive oil, maybe some bacon.
I use olive oil and butter, now and then a sweet potato (maybe 2 a week)  I try many veggies but have to stay away from peppers and tomatoes, they just don't agree with me.  Oh, lots of spinach too.  I look for recipes from Paleo cookbooks.

Lots of water all day.
Walk on treadmill 20-30 min a day at 3.5.

I am going into my forth week and my mid-section is bigger, thicker and I am very confused.
I quickly lost 15 lbs when I went on this before and never strayed for 2 years. Then I moved (stress!) and fell off, but recently started again.  I love this WOE and have no problem staying on it, but I don't want to GAIN weight??? I eat no dairy, no sugar no bread, no wheat
Any ideas?
I am 71 going on 45, petite,  5'2, usually I am about 130-135, now scale says 140, but it's not the numbers it's this middle thickness..so weird,,helpppppppppp! (and thanks)

I don't know, that's very weird! It doesn't sound like a huge amount of food. Maybe you could try going low-carb for a few weeks, see if that gets things moving in the right direction?

Use Fitday www.fitday.com My Fitness Pal www.myfitnesspal.com or www.cronometer.com to calculate your total carb and calorie intake.  You may find it to be much higher than you think. One of the big mistakes about paleo is that you can eat without regard to calories.  That works for some people. But others need to track calories and carbs for about a month to get an idea of their intake because it is usually higher than they think.   Some people are of the mistaken belief that if they keep carbs very low they can eat 4,000 calories a day.

doesn't seem anything wrong with what you're eating...

How much coconut milk is in the smoothie?  It's very calorific - something like 600 cals a can?

Maybe it's not the food - could it be hormonal?  The reason I say this is because of the weight gain around the middle
Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

Hormones..I wish, at 71 they are few and far between.......BUT thank you for the advice, I went to Fit Day and OMG I am eating too much. I did think you could just eat all the meat and veggies and fruit you wanted.  It worked before, but I guess my slower metabolisim now means I have to be aware, can't just eat 1/2 of a pork roast or 3 eggs and bacon and , and, and!
I will now start tracking and making better choices, and so much for coconut milk.  Will up my exercise too..wow, who knew!
Thanks again.

now and then a sweet potato (maybe 2 a week)

This is the problem.  Sweet potatoes are not paleo, and have a lot of starch that can cause weight gain.
