Im not losing weight! Help!

Hi everyone. Ive been on the Paleo for about a month now but for the last week Ive cut out fruit and nuts completely. I thought I would write a food journal so you guys can give me your opinion as to what I am doing wrong! If anything im putting on weight rather than losing it  :-[ Tomorrow i am going to my first Crossfit class so that will hopefully help as well, Im looking at going about 3 times a week.

Yesterday 11.1.12

Breakfast - Chunks of fresh coconut
                - Raw cocao with coconut cream

Lunch- Large salad including lettuce, onion, cucumber, half an avocado, red capsicum and a 200g tin of wild salmon. For the dressing i used avocado oil, balsamic vinegar and dijon mustard.

Dinner - (Went out to dinner)
           - Pork belly with crackling
           - Side salad with cucumber, lettuce, onion and tomato (no dressing).

Snack - Fresh chunks of coconut.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated! Thanks  :)

Oh, I will also add that I had about 250mls of coconut milk during the day and 250mls of coconut cream in the cocoa.. is that too much fat?

I don't know about you, but coconut milk/butter/cream doesn't really do it for me. I much prefer animal fat for weight loss.

The paleo diet is based on the notion that certain foods (wheat, beans, etc.) are not what we are designed to eat, and ignoring this can have damaging effects, causing weight gain and other serious health issues. Looking over your menu, I suspect the cacao. It is a new world plant, a bean, and it contains caffeine, 3 strikes against it.

Paleo diet is not just about losing weight.
You can cut off your arm and lose weight if you like.
Paleo diet is about being healthy, feeling great.
Losing weight is just a side effect if you are immensely overweight in the first place.

How overweight are you?
How old are you?
What do you do for a living, activities you do.
How toxic is your body?  Have you done any detox protocols?

The body hangs on to fat as storage of toxins.  When you are detoxed enough, your body may then start giving up the toxins as fat.  If you stop polluting your body with chemicals that cannot be eaten but placed on your skin, fat reduction may happen.

There are cases of extremely obese people where these people must be put on a largely carnivorous diet.

It depends on your case.

OK I will rephrase- I want to lose fat :) I weight 80kg and am 170cm tall so I need to lose the excess fat. My ideal weight would be around 65, as thats what it was when I had a lapband. Sadly due to complications 3 years in on having a lapband it had to be removed and since have put on weight again. I was very sick, lathargic, moody and depressed due to not eating much and basically living off energy drinks while it was in. I lost the weight but felt terrible and constantly had colds and flus.

Since being on the paleo I have so much energy and feel fantastic! Just would like the weight to start coming off now...

Food Diary 12.1.12

Breakfast - Boiled Egg and 2 slices smoked salmon

Lunch - Large salad (lettuce, red onion, spring onion, capsicum and avocado) with 200g salmon tin, and dressing (avocado oil, dijon mustard and balsamic vinegar)

Dinner - Wasnt very hungry, ate a boiled egg and 2 slices smoked salmon.

Snacks - Drink with raw cocoa and 270g tin of coconut milk
            - 4 tbl coconut cream and some cocoa mixed in (tastes like chocolate mousse!)

Im 25 and Im a social worker, I sit at my desk most of the day. I wouldnt say my body is very toxic, however had life threatening surgery (lapband) 3 months ago so im still technically in recovery mode, my doctor said it would be 6 -12 months before im back to normal. :)

Lapband sounds downright unhealthy.
Have you had your lapband removed yet?

The correct diet for losing weight should be maximum nutrition and weight loss at the same time.

Never look at being malnourished as a solution to losing weight.

And yes, sometimes, it just takes time.

I used to be obese myself and I took the long way of being happy with just losing 2 lbs per month as long as I changed my eating habits.  I happily ate and was always full, no hunger, yet lost weight. 

I'm sure you will get to the losing weight part.  Just be patient.  Eat more fat and less carbs is the path to weight loss.

The lapband is out and the weight it back on! (well not all, but 15kgs worth is) I lost 50kg in total with the lapband but as I said, I was so sick and slept most of the time due to only drinking energy drinks and eating lollies for energy! Glad it's out!

Had my first Crossfit class yesterday- wow. I did about 13mins of hard work, the instructor showed and talked me through things most of the class. I can hardly move today! Loved it though! Going back Monday.

13.1.12

Dinner - Salad with seared beef strips and roast duck

Snacks - coconut oil with shredded coconut mixed in

I worked out my daily calories today using an app. 2050 calories (wow), 160g of fat and 50g carbs. is that too many calories??

I think your diet is excellent. I would suggest ramping up the exercise. As mentioned in an earlier post this is NOT all about weight loss. Best of luck !

I disagree about more exercise. You want to exercise smart not more but see how you go with your xfit. Humans are designed to lift, walk a lot and sprint a bit. Add a bit of athletic type stuff like jumping and climbing....

You've only posted 3 days BUT try some green and other veg - I mean lettuce has no value. Dark green leafy veg like broccoli, cabbage, kale, spinach, silverbeet/chard and the gammut of asian greens are nutritional powerhouses. Add other veg like carrot, parsnip, kohlrabi, squash/pumpkin etc for flavour, variety and nutrition. Why no red meat? You can have a steak and veg, a soup or a stew.

You are having a lot of coconut. You want to be eating animal fat, not just vegetable fat. You are partly having the coconut as a sweet or a cream substitute right?

Actually, I think you would do better to eat a good protein, veg and fat breakfast , eat enough at meals that you don't need snacks, eat more vegetables than salad, stop worrying about fat and get it from animals sources and drop the snacks like pretend chocolate mousse.

Er, you may find it easier if you approach this way of eating a a means to health and look for nutrient rich foods, rather than viewing it as a weight loss diet. Are you following a particular 'brand' of paleo? Some of them are a bit animal fat phobic. Just don't be in a rush, and concentrate on health as you sound as though you've previously been malnourished.

Remember, strong and healthy is the new skinny.

Thanks for that avelin :) Im going to do Crossfit 2-3 times a week (i dont think i could do any more!) Ill try and incorporate more than lettuce, its just the easiest to buy for lunch from the supermarket.

Ill try and add more animal fat, I just still have the biggest craving for sweet food and so coconut products fulfill that, will try and limit a lot more from now on.

Todays diary 15.1.12

Breakfast - blueberry pancakes (almond meal, coconut milk and 2 eggs)
               - 2 Pork rashers and 2 slices smoked salmon
               - Was still hungry so i ate a cup of berries with coconut cream

Lunch      - Wasnt hungry

Dinner     - Large Steak with 1 whole avocado
               - Coconut cream with almond meal

So it must either be a bug or something I ate on Sunday because I was sick all of yesterday and Sunday night. I still have major stomach upset and after some eggs this morning felt worse. Just tried eating some salad because I am so hungry but now my stomach is aching really badly again!

Ive taken some ginger tablets but can anyone else recommend something paleo friendly? Everyone at work keeps telling me to eat dry ginger biscuits but they are of course either loaded with gluten or sugar so that is not an option!!

Suggestions highly appreciated!

What did you eat on Sunday? Food poisoning? Bad meat? Stomach virus?

I'd say see a doctor tomorrow, but in the meantime, maybe some warm chicken/beef broth would help with the hunger.

Watermelon works wonders for some. As does carrot and ginger juice.
