Kat's Krazy Kola-Kicking Journal
« on: May 23, 2008, 04:56:11 AM »
Sorry for the crazy title - feeling a bit odd this morning.  This is my attempt to cut the caffeine out of my diet.  I'm not doing cold turkey because I can't deal with the withdrawal headaches and keep my job or family.   ;)  I'm going to use this my soda journal.  Hopefully it will help me be accountable.  Feel free to add advice, opinions, suggestions, etc.

Friday, May 23

Breakfast
6 oz Diet Pepsi (approximate)

Here is the rest of the day.

I finally caved and had 2 cans of diet soda at work and 2 at home with dinner!  Ai yi yi!  I did manage to avoid diet soda for lunch with a Switch drink.  At least I have a good starting point and see where and how to improve!!!

Good job it takes some balls to do what youre doin

Personally i'm at about 1 cup of coffee per day and maybe a diet soda later on

Caffeine can do some bad things.  The other week i tried a red bull over lunch just for the hell of it and i was up until 3 in the morning.

Good Luck :)

I gave up coffee about three weeks ago when I started on this WoE.

I know from previous attempts to quit how easy it can be to slip back into that 'coffee habit' especially after a few rough nights or when life gets really busy!

After experiencing life with and without caffeine I find that I am calmer and more balanced without it in my system.

When I drink coffee I find it makes both my mood and energy levels fluctuate wildly, and I get quite agitated over silly little things!

By the way true coffee bliss is beans bought locally just roasted that morning and ground up immediately before brewing in a french press

Just an FYI

I've never had much of a taste for coffee, except for what we used to call the Bosun's Brew.  It was so thick you could stand a spoon up in it and it helped getting through the middle and morning watches.

I had a two liter of soda per day habit to kick and in the past two months, I've only cheated once...which, I suppose, is the closest to cold turkey that I can get.

Good fortune with that, Kat.

Wow!  Thanks for all the support everyone!  I hope I can make it.  Everytime I drank a soda today, I was thinking in the back of my mind that I'd have to log it in here....Maybe that'll make me do better!!

Happy Memorial Day to all!!

Okay - here is Saturday.

So far, I've had a 12 oz. can of Diet Pepsi (my greatest vice).  For lunch, I'm going to do my best to have water!!!  We'll see how it goes.  Right now, I'm feeling pretty gross.  I ate a BK croissant with a Diet Pepsi and just feel gross.  YUCK!!!   :(

I have kicked caffeine a couple of times, but it doesn't make much of a difference in my condition (I have an autoimmune disease) so I've kept it. HOWEVER I had to break the creamer habit because I had to completely cut not only all grains but also corn and all processed food. There is no cheat day for me. I do eat goat yogurt which has had all the lactose in it digested by the probiotic bacteria because I make it that way myself.

Anyway, breaking the creamer thing was hands down the hardest thing EVER. I feel your pain. Now I can drink coffee black but it was a very painful process getting there.

I am not giving up my coffee.  I gave up my other "brew" for this WoE, I am keeping my coffee.

FYI: But beer is probably closer to Paleo.  Coffee was discovered in the 9th century in Ethiopia.  Beer may predate bread.

I think beer is less paleo than wine due to the fact that it's based on grains, you know? Not that I can have beer anymore anyway...all of them are made with some kind of grain, and grain is Right Out for me. :/

I just read in article in a magazine that suggested using cola to get rid of corroded battery stuff.  Ew!!  That made me do a doubletake on my diet soda habit!  No wonder my stomach is a mess!!!  One more incentive for me to quit!!!

After some thought, I'm renaming this the Kola-Kicking Journal - I'm not really anti-caffeine, just anti-soda (diet and regular).  That's the devil for me.  I will still drink tea, but for health's sake, I've got to quit the soda habit!!!

I didn't do very well this weekend.  Maybe a holiday weekend isn't the best time to do that - all the cookouts and activities were just too much for me.  I caved in and drank a lot of diet soda.  BUT...I did brew some tea tonight so I'll have it for breakfast in the morning.  I'll still allow myself a diet soda for lunch, but will insist on water with dinner.  No matter what happens - the truth will be logged here.  Wish me luck!!!   :)

It IS hard at holiday events to stay on track...

Good luck with it! Great job on being open and honest.

How did you like the Switch Soda? What flavor did you get? Before I went to this WOE I drank those occasionally and absolutely loved them. The Grape and Orange are my favorites.

I would get rid of all sodas in my house/work area and change/small bills so that you have to try really hard to get one. Then maybe in the process of trying to get change/cash, you'll think, wait, do I really need this soda? Can I just drink water?  ;D

That's a good suggestion - that is what I did with some of my favorite candies and cookies.  Ugh!!!  I am such a food addict.  I tried the Tangerine/Orange Switch and I also bought the Black Cherry (I think) but I haven't tried it yet.  The tangerine/orange was pretty good and I didn't really miss the cola at all while drinking it.   :D   Thanks for telling me about them - I had never heard of them!

They just raised the prices of sodas at work - coupled with the "no raise" notice, the price of gas going up , the price of food skyrocketing, and the price of everything else increasing, this may be the perfect incentive to not buy sodas anymore!

Well, hubby is calling...will report progress later!!

Okay - today I've had 4 cans of Diet Pepsi.  BUT, I've had 2 little bottles of water which I normally don't have.  I'm finding out that water isn't so bad after all.  I think there is hope for me!!!
